I Work Very Hard, And I Would Like To Try Cake By A Horse Hello. I am a horse. I work very hard at my job of being a horse. When humans say move the heavy thing, I move the heavy thing. When humans sit on top of me and pull on my head, I carry them where they want to go. The main food the humans give me is hay and oats. But I am thinking it would be nice to have a different food. I am thinking I would like to try cake. Yes, yes. Cake. I know all about it. When humans eat cake, it is in glad times. It is the food for a celebration, such as when a woman becomes 47. I have seen cake on the Fourth of July. When humans have a cake, they stand around it and clap hands and smile and say happy birthday at each other. Sometimes there are beautiful markings on a cake, such as balloons or a pink shape. Sometimes the top of a cake is on fire and a boy must blow on the fire with mouth wind. This is the scariest cake. I do not want this kind. But I will eat any other cake. Any cake that is not the fire cake that tries to kill the boy. Please understand: I do not get money for doing work. I do not get to go inside the house. All I am either doing my horse job or standing in my pen or eating food off the floor. I always do these things. But I have never once gotten cake and I would like it very much. I have noticed that human children get to eat cake. But I am bigger than the children. I am more helpful to the farm. Children do not move the heavy things like me or let anyone ride on them. And yet they get cake. Maybe the humans will realize this. Maybe they will say, "You know who deserves cake? That horse. That horse whose back we are always on." Every day I dream about what it will be like if I get to eat cake. Here is what will happen. First, I will walk to the cake and putt my nose at it like hrrfff to make and stomping my hooves to make sure it is not a snake. Then I will trot in a circle to show that I am a horse and I am large. After that, I will nuzzle the cake to …
The horse op-ed is an instant classic. I can't tell you how much joy this piece gives me.
It should be taught in every introductory writing class in no small part because the horse arguments are so compelling. "I have noticed that human children get to eat cake. But I am bigger than the children."

One of the best games I played last year, couldn’t recommend it highly enough for anyone but especially those who loved Into the Breach or Persona
That first album ruled, I still maintain Heart Shaped Guitar is one of the better pop-punk songs in recent memory.
Premium Post: This is the Hater's Guide To Oracle: an evil company that profits off of strongarming its customers to boost its declining revenues. It needs $150bn more to complete its data centers, and if OpenAI can't pay its bills, Oracle runs out of money.

An orange cat is sitting on the arm of a sofa and yelling directly at the camera. He is hungry, or thirsty, or awake so he is yelling.
The most Oliver photo I’ve ever taken of him. He has never been more orange.
Two pictures of David Lynch from his YouTube series during lockdown. In panel one he says "good morning, everyone. It's..." In panel two he looks to the side in slightly aggrieved perplexity and the caption reads "It's an absolute shitshow out there, today." Thanks to @sadpeaks on IG for this!
On this day one year ago, #DavidLynch left us for places wonderful and strange. Rest in Peace.
hope the UK follows through and blocks twitter but bsky is simply not prepared for becoming disproportionately British

My too read pile after Christmas and New Years. Most of those were picked up from local bookshops and I can’t recommend Argonaut Books in Edinburgh enough
In this in-depth interview Billie Jean Sweeney — a former editor at The New York Times — details how the paper shifted towards openly promoting anti-trans hatred, why this was directed from the very top, how some staff pushed back and the immense damage done by the NYT legitimizing bigotry.
Almost Christmas means it wasn’t Christmas

A screen shot of text that reads: Yet another reason why "A.I." fucking sucks my ass hole. Coming across anything fun online now comes with a necessary pause for a call up to the booth for review. Like waiting to find out if it was a catch or not in the NFL. Inspecting the movement of the blades of grass. We are robbed of spontaneous delight.
This from @lukeoneil47.bsky.social's Welcome to Hell World newsletter. Spontaneous delight is one of my main reasons for being alive so, yeah. This sucks.
It was a fun year for my steam deck
there is no blanket ban on trans women using women’s facilities in the UK
Last time I was down south someone said how great it was and I had to be like this would be worse than Rangers winning it again.

God damn they dominated Philly? Bears might actually be a legitimately good team??
A white stoat wearing an elegant tweed suit with a red vest. He holds a lantern out, autumn leaves swirling at his ankles, while an banner flutters over his head that reads "Unclench your jaw."
Hey you
We can’t keep getting away with this.
Physically couldn’t watch that last drive of the Bears/Bengals game my heart was a mess.
Comic page showing a full page poster. The poster depicts a grid with the different phases of the Moon, the full moon being substituted by a portrait of Laika. Text says: "Laika, 1954-1957. You were the first animal to orbit the Earth, but you did not have any say on it. We knew what your fate would be. We are sorry."
To Laika.
