this wavering chaos
piercing my heart
worry clouding
my brain—
darkening shadows
nevertheless
finding the light
in nature and art
in grateful energy
in valuing those
who love me

looking out at the sea
past the deep end of blue
my mind traveling
past the horizon
liberating itself from
worry and sorrow
cradling me
soothing the pain
making me remember
things long forgotten

A Snowy Egret flying. A white egret with wings outstretched and bright yellow feet flying against a blue sky.
Spent a couple of weeks in Nueces County. Loved the summery temps (high 80s to low 90s) and loved this beautiful Snowy Egret soaring above me at Suter Wildlife Refuge in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Enjoying a morning walk along the Colorado River in Austin, TX on Tuesday morning and we saw this Cooper's Hawk catch a Grackle for breakfast.

I tore the sky apart, searching for the rainbow;
when I awoke from the dream
it was raining in my heart

This beauty lives in Rome. A Rose-ringed Parakeet hiding among the leaves, but I managed to get an okay photo.

This Yellow-legged Gull is flying by with Salerno, Italy in the background.

This is not a bird. However, I enjoyed taking its portrait while in Croatia in early July. I think it is called a Bladetail. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable could correct this if I am wrong.

A picture of my new book Words for Life.
Word of the Day is ‘copemate’ (16th century): the friend in life who gets you through.
It’s one of the 365 entries in Words for Life, an almanac of my favourite words and etymologies to give (I hope) each day a boost.
A few of the highlights this morning while birding at Chatfield State Park, Colorado. Up close and personal with a Bee-fly, Horned Lark, Lark Buntings, and a sweet Western Kingbird. I LOVE the birding life.

I spent the first half of July in Europe. It was an amazing experience. Of course, everywhere I went I was looking for birds. In Venice, Italy, I saw these incredible African Sacred Ibis flying overhead and all through the city were the ever-present yellow-legged gulls.

A little backyard birding. This little Rufus Hummingbird and young American Goldfinch caught my eye! Thankfully, my camera is usually nearby.

Gouache painting in lush dark green and blue featuring a cross-section of a pond at night. A green harlequin-patterned frog with a hint of tadpole tail climbs half out of the water into the cattails, looking at the stars. In the darkness lurks a taloned heron foot. The water is full of tadpoles, pond weed, insect larvae, and frog eggs. A single bright mayfly hangs on a cattail leaf above the frog's head.
