Eastern Phoebe I had planned to be at Pole Farm by dawn. Instead I overslept, and the window for bird photography closed before I could even get dressed. Working from home is supposed to give you flexibility, but that morning it gave me nothing except the awareness of what I’d missed. The Eastern Phoebe had shown up on Merlin the day before — just a detection, no photograph to go with it. So at lunch I took the X-T3 and the XF150-600mmF5.6-8 R LM OIS WR outside and sat in my Go Chair, the lens resting across my lap, and waited. One sassafras branch was a problem. The phoebe turned up and sat in exactly the wrong spot — the branch above casting a shadow that cut across its head, the whole bird half in shadow. There was nothing to do but wait it out. Eventually it moved to the bare branches of my neighbour’s tree, and I had my shot. Brown cap, whitish throat, a wash of yellow-green on the belly. No wing bars to speak of. It doesn’t announce itself the way a woodpecker does. But there’s something compact and alert about it — the way it holds itself on a branch, slightly upright, watching. Looking at these frames, I keep thinking of the Yellow-bellied Elaenia I photographed in St. Vincent last May. Both are tyrant flycatchers — though the Elaenia carries considerably more yellow and a small crest that gives it a slightly rumpled look. The phoebe is neater, more composed. First photograph of this species. It took a missed alarm, a half-shadowed sassafras, and a lunch break to get it. ### Like this: Like Loading...

A brown bird with a light, speckled breast is perched on a branch outside our front door. This is a Hermit Thrush, a lovely bird that generally puts in an appearance in the Adirondack region by late April. This bird is a short-distance migrant. It winters in the southern US, rarely crossing the Gulf of Mexico. In eastern and central North America, males begin migrating north in March, arriving in our part of the Adirondack Mountains in late April. The Hermit Thrush breeds in a wide range of forest types, including conifer, northern hardwood, and mixed forest. The Hermit Thrush is seen infrequently, but it is commonly heard singing its haunting, evocative song. This thrush is part of a pair that were breeding on our property. The other thrush that breeds on our property is the Swainson’s Thrush.
