My thoughts go to Rafe, Rosamund, Sarah and the rest of the cast and crew.

Thank you for your hard and wonderful work.

I'm perfectly clear what a strawman is. I understand now that you're referring to my "100% positivity" remark, which was not an argument. It was a remark in jest, which i tried to indicate with an emoji.

It seemed to me that me criticising pacing was "malarkey" to you. Was that incorrect?

I do regret jumping into someone's thread, because i know that is different from just posting my own. But i have seen others, including Nae'Blis in his spoiler free S3 review, talk about pacing issues making parts of the season feel rushed, so i present that as evidence that I don't strawman. πŸ™

Thoughts seconds after watching episode 2.

I have nothing negative to say. Shadow's Waiting is probably my favourite episode of the whole show so far. Character driven storytelling, book faithful and different as needed and absolutely stunning to look at.

Perhaps that's was fans of the show want now? A plot summary of the books, where everything is crammed in, instead of organic storytelling and character work like in S1 and S2?

I always thought that's what the book-cloaks wanted. Sorry, i'm getting a little defensive here.

Am i expressing myself poorly? Why are you still misunderstanding and misrepresenting what i'm saying? It's not MORE exposition i want. Perrin's ring was great visual storytelling.

I just wanted each scene to be a little more than bare minimum plot requirement.

I think it's more about that they put too little lore and backstory into S1 and S2, and now they have to play exposition catch-up.

This ep should have dropped the Lanfear/bubble of evil plot-line so they could give each scene just a few more lines of dialogue instead. That's all that was needed.

Only 100% positivity allowed here, eh? πŸ˜‹

And i'm not saying there was no character work. I'm saying the script (or editing) was so tight that to me it felt like a summary of events rather than organic storytelling. πŸ™‚

Of course it's my opinion. Why would i express someone else's opinion? And you're totally misunderstanding if you think i'm trying to dampen anyone's enthusiasm. I enjoyed the episode! I just think most scenes were given short shrift. I want WoT to feel like storytelling, not a book summary.

Ah. Well, i agree with that. More exposition is the last thing this episode needed. What it needed was a little more character work and a little less plot. Scenes were so stripped down that they had barely begun before we were rushed to the next scene.

I'm not sure what you mean. Could you please elaborate?

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

That's fine. To me it felt like they edited out half a page of dialogue from the end of almost every scene.

I'm happy you enjoyed it, i did too. But i care about the craft of film-making, and they simply crammed too much into this episode.

Who knows, if they keep this storytelling pace up, perhaps Rand can be in and out of Rhuidean in two minutes flat! πŸ˜„

I'm not a book-cloak in any way, and a staunch defender of this show. But this was far from the best episode. This was setup, exposition and plot to a degree that there was no room for any scene to breathe or linger, and rushed through at a pace that would put Usain Bolt to shame. πŸ˜„

It absolutely felt rushed to me. I would say they really pushed it with how little character interactions and character development they could get away with compared to how they did it in S1 and S2.

Woosh! What was that? That was Maiden's Kiss flying by in "100 miles per hour". πŸ˜„

I hope this was setup and not what we can expect from the rest of the season. There was so much plot and exposition that the characters barely had any room to breathe. Enjoyable as it was, E1 was 99% moving pieces to their correct points on the board.

Cold opens in S1 and S2 were usually pretty slow, languid affairs. This was very in medias res.

I didn't expect the rest of the episode to be even faster paced. Egwene was in and out of those arches in seconds! πŸ˜„

The amount of information non-book readers are supposed to digest from this episode must be brain frying.

When i first watched the cold open i kept thinking that it probably was the first scene after the title card. It just didn't feel like a cold open.

Very enjoyable season opener for many reasons, but holy hell did they have a lot of ground they wanted to cover. The pacing was INSANE. It sometimes felt like i was watching a montage.

Absolutely the most rushed episode of WoT so far. SO. MUCH. EXPOSITION.

While it looks fantastic, what it represents is too on the nose. She might as well wear a sign saying "I'M BLACK AJAH Y'ALL," but no one in the tower even comments about it.

This is my only niggle with the sneak peek.

Today, by a happy accident, i learned about the Seelie and Unseelie Courts on wikipedia and spent way too many hours making a symphonic rock opera song called "Rage of the Unseelie Court".
