Left: Adult and nestling White-throated Dipper (Cinclus cinclus; adult on top, chick below). Right: Microscopy images showing microplastics from nestling faecal samples. Birds were handled under license.
πNew study!
Microplastics found in 62% of White-throated Dipper broods in Scotland & Basque Country. No body condition effects detected.

Fig. 1 from the article: Conceptual summary outlining potential mechanistic links between migration, gut the microbiome (βMB'), and migration performance, including variables likely to drive individual variation of gut microbiomes and its impact on (some of) host physiological parameters relevant to migration (metabolism [i.e. energetics] and immunity).
Award issue: @pcapi.bsky.social and @alice-risely.bsky.social review what we know, and what we need to know, in order to understand to what extent the gut microbiome confers important services for migrating birds

This study was a huge team effort, and the first publication (of hopefully many more), using the full 20 site gradient. Thanks to all the co-authors, landowners, staff, students and volunteers that made the study possible. @dmdominoni.bsky.social @pcapi.bsky.social @rachelrosereid.bsky.social
Iβm excited to share our new paper in Ecology!
Our 9βyear study across an urbanβrural gradient shows native trees, especially oaks, boost blue tit breeding success. More native foliage supports more of the birds preferred prey and improves reproductive success.

Fascinated by bird migration and movement ecology? π¦π Join us at @vogelwarte.bsky.social to study annual cycle energetics with multi-sensor loggers in multiple species
Deadline: 20 Feb 2026
Starting: June 2026
Supervision: Martins Briedis & me
Info: tinyurl.com/2dbv9nzh
Winter means.. communal roosts! π¦
π¦π¦
But why do birds form such roosts? In red kites, young single males are the most frequent visitors. Once paired, birds roost more solitarily, often together as a pair.
