A legendary hacker with a gift for making hardware do things it was never meant to - Sprite has ported Doom to a Rigol scope, built a Vectrex multi cart, and built the Hackaday FPGA badge - all with the kind of deranged ingenuity that makes him a natural judge for our ASIC demoscene competition.

Will runs Project F, an FPGA and hardware education site covering graphics pipelines, VGA timing, framebuffers, and RISC-V. His tutorials have helped countless people bridge the gap from software to FPGAs - making him a perfect judge for designs that push display hardware to its limits.

A self-taught chip designer and inventor, Jeri is legendary in the hardware community for squeezing a complete Commodore 64 inside a joystick. She also pioneered DIY semiconductor fabrication, the first person to demonstrate building a transistor using household items.

Tiny Tapeout - Tiny Tapeout Tiny Tapeout makes it more accessible than ever to get your designs manufactured on a real chip!

4/5 Congratulations to everyone and thanks to @tinytapeout.com for making this possible! Never have imagined doing a (winning) demoscene entry in 2026 on ASIC. This is beyond wild. I was last involved in demoscene in ~1999, I dearly miss these days. TT makes all the fun come back.

2/3) Amazingly my two entries work: 'Warp' and 'WhyNot' ; 'Warp' is my entry to the demoscene competition and 'WhyNot' was a crazy "let's do it in one day" last minute entry. Both work on actual ASIC!! How cool is that?

Graph shows frequency over time - why do you think it has a ~3 minute oscillation?

What if I tell you the signal comes from a skull shaped ring oscillator?

This open source silicon is currently sending data from low earth orbit, 500km up!

And the satellite is slowly spinning!

Yes, that’s a GDSII render.
Yes, it’s inside Blender.
Yes, it’s our design on TTSKY25A chip.

Surviving Space: Radiation, Bit Flips, and Naked Silicon
Surviving Space: Radiation, Bit Flips, and Naked Silicon YouTube video by Zero To ASIC Course

We sent an ASIC to space.

Then we asked a nuclear engineer what would happen to it.

A deep dive into radiation, bit flips, orbital hot spots, and what it really takes for silicon to survive in low Earth orbit.

Then somehow we recovered, sent 12 chips to be manufactured, sent 1 chip into space and gained access to another fab!
