New paper that merits a read (Im totally unbiased...not). Simple, straightforward, impactful message. Prediction a la LLM is nice. Constituent-constrained prediction is nicer. @jiajiezou.bsky.social and Nai Ding show brain, behavioral, MEG, ECoG data.

Neuroscientist, speaking publicly: "We know almost nothing about the brain"
Neuroscientist, reviewing a paper: "There is absolutely no way that complicated measurement can mean what they think it means"
These models can partly generalize across species, brain regions and tasks, suggesting that a set of machine-learnable rules govern neural population activity, writes @juangallego.bsky.social. But will we be able to understand them? #neuroskyence

I guess we’re doing this

We're at the tail end of an incredibly rare superbloom in Death Valley, and this photographer captured the brilliant blossoms at their peak.

Hi Antonio, Thanks for your patience with my snail reply.
It’s just always great to get replies like this.

Enjoyed writing this with the wonderful philosopher Bill Ramsey
I think we should rebrand Professors as "Natural Intelligence Companions" in the hopes of getting universities to throw a bunch of resources behind getting students to come to class and office hours to use our services.

[Cognitive capacity nobody understands] is very important.
However,
the underlying neural mechanisms remain enigmatic.
Here we show that
[stimuli somehow related to the capacity]
can be decoded from
[spatiotemporal description].
Our results show that we can do what we did.

In a collab b/w my group + @nathangrubaugh.bsky.social, led by a fabulous doctoral student, we synthesize the data on epistasis across several viral pathogen systems (e.g., influenza, HIV, SARS-CoV-2, tobacco etch virus, etc).

👏 Congratulations Juan Álvaro Gallego on his project “SELECT” being selected in the ERC Consolidator 2025 Call!
🧠 SELECT will investigate the neural mechanisms underlying the learning, execution and adaptation of skilled movements at multiple brain areas

My spicy take would be that neural manifolds may not be disprovable given how the brains we are aware of are built, and the challenges are: (1) whether they give us understanding beyond single neuron descriptions (2) whether they have "causal power"
A recent attempt at this youtu.be/oxQyKByqDSU?...
this is mesmerizing
It's Friday, and apparently bluesky is ready for this fun revelation:
