This sort of modelling is obviously quite uncertain, but overwhelmingly it shows that vaccines have a massive saving in economic terms.

The COVID-19 vaccines may have been the best investment that humanity ever made!

Again, you seem to be relishing the idea of the deaths of their children acting as some kind of comeuppance as though the children themselves 1) have any real say in the matter, and 2) aren't worthy of being treated as independent human beings worthy of compassion and capable of suffering.

What exactly did the children of these parents do to deserve a slow, agonizing death, Teresa, that you so loudly support here? Or do you not view their children as independent people in their own right?

Historians: this is a worrying development. Historians use the Hansard to analyze what was said in parliamentary discussions. If the Hansard is subject to editing out things that are politically unacceptable at the time, we (and future historians) have a problem.

I'm an "A.i." abolitionist.

No consumer-facing LLMs or generative "A.i." in anything.

Sure, machine learning in science and a few other limited applications is fine.

But consumer-facing LLMs and generative "A.i." that are based on theft, push disinfo, and can be manipulated by billionaires?

No.

Meta has been accused of using faulty data to train an artificial intelligence climate tool, with scientists claiming the Big Tech group raised false hopes about the feasibility of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at scale.
The tech company said last year that it had helped researchers with the elusive problem of identifying materials to efficiently remove carbon dioxide from air, by publishing a “groundbreaking” data set on which it also trained free-to-use machine learning models.
But none of the 135 materials that Meta’s research said could bind CO₂ “strongly” had that characteristic, while some did not exist, according to researchers from Heriot-Watt University and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL).
“I wish they had computed a bit less and thought a bit more,” said Berend Smit, a professor of chemical engineering at EPFL, describing some of Meta’s results as “nonsense”. “You get the impression that the Big Tech mentality is do first, think later.”

This is just going to be the first of many, many stories you are going to read about big tech companies faking "AI for climate" claims. The sheer volume of AI-climate-washing going on right now is huge, and it's very likely most of the claims are fabricated or exaggerated

This is an astonishingly bad idea. Generative AI, as implemented by the companies that you're "partnering" with, is built off of stealing work from human creators. There is a pressing need for computational literacy, but it won't come from embracing the products & companies that are causing harm.

This is a laundry list of rhetorical strategies to defend the adoption of a given technology for the purposes of advancing an ideology & economic regime: inevitability, unquestioning praise of “innovation,” buy-in from concerned stakeholders, assurances that partnership is not capitulation. 1/n

Even the NYT knows this is a bad idea.
Partnering with these companies to ruin an entire generation of children is shameful.

I had better get into a decent grad school after all this is all I'm saying.

Going back to school in your 30s/40s to complete the degree you weren't able to finish when you were younger really is pretty great. Choosing philosophy is...a choice, but not a regrettable one.

And adding a concurrent degree in Physics to the mix? Delightful.

And insane.

Why have I done this.

I miss stumbling upon random personal sites (especially fansites) on Geocities, Angelfire, etc.

Back when the internet was, if maybe not good, at least much less bad.

My one overly sincere post for the holidays/end-of-year is that I truly wish people who enjoy yelling at strangers on the internet would stop, for like two seconds, to ponder the litany of potentially very sad or difficult things the person they're yelling at may endured that day, or week, or year.

*crawling out of the trenches, bloody and broken* We got 'em. The Taemin tickets. We got them.

My computer crashed almost immediately after for unknown reasons (this is 100% true) and the husband has only now fixed it, but we fucking got them.

So, there's a kind of overly sensational article floating around covering 2 research papers— one from OpenAI & one from Apollo Research— claiming to prove that the Opus-3, ChatGPT-o1, and GPT-4o models can engage in "deception."

The article itself makes claims about the models trying to "escape,"…

There’s a stunning variety of third-person singular (3sg) pronouns (meaning 'she / he / it' or singular 'they') across Chinese languages and dialects. Here are a few of them:

Mandarin: tā
Cantonese: keoi5
Taiwan Hokkien and Shanghainese: i
Southern Wu: gi, ji

If you wanted to panic, the time was the night he was re-elected. Now it's time to take a deep breath and do things like express your views to your member of Congress, and start planning for 2026.
There will be no panic in this dojo.

Soil fungi remain active and invest in storage compounds during drought independent of future climate conditions Nature Communications - How climate change will impact microbial community growth is unclear. Here, the authors use a field experiment with varying global change factors, finding fungal growth more...

Excited to share our new study in @naturecomms.bsky.social showing that soil fungi, unlike bacteria, remain fully active under severe drought conditions, and also invest in synthesis of storage compounds.
Led by the amazing @loutsi.bsky.social and Alberto Canarini.
