Our graphic shows Arctic sea-ice ridges aren’t just rubble—they’re biomass hotspots.
In summer, they can hold up to ~80–100% of ice-algal biomass despite covering much less area. Their complex structure creates diverse microhabitats for microbial life.

i don't agree that NASA is spreading disinformation. My amazing colleagues at NASA Earth science have worked so hard in such challenging times to keep this up. I want to thank them for their courage and grit. science.nasa.gov/climate-chan...
We are recruiting an Earth Observation System Architect at ESTEC. The role will prepare for the emerging AI/ML paradigm reshaping operational NWP and ocean prediction. What is the EO architecture to support these approaches?

How thick is the sea ice we are breaking with RV Kronprins Haakon? To get a good and continuous measurement of the sea ice thickness, we have now deployed an electromagnetic transmitter-receiver antenna from the ship’s bow. Read more: instagram.com/p/DWGznZwiB-J

Time series graph showing the Baltic Sea annual maximum ice extent in 1900-2026.
The sea ice extent in the Baltic Sea probably reached its maximum on 20 February 2026, when the extent was 181,000 km².
Based on the maximum, this was the most widespread ice cover in the Baltic Sea since 2011, and overall the 5th harshest ice winter in the 21st century.
The AMSR2 data since 2012 agrees upon the maximum. What is your data source for the long time period?
