Nebula ballots due on the 15th. With a 4-day weekend from work, finally getting time to read the stories I didn't read prior to nominating ballot and reread rest. #AmReading #AmReadingFiction #Writersky #WritingCommunity #WritersCommunity #ScienceFiction #AmReadingSciFi #AmReadingScienceFiction
AI just crossed a threshold. My latest blog post discusses the "Brave New World" in which we find ourselves. Enjoy.

Revising story from a Codex "contest" that capped it at 750 words. Too many inconsistencies, not enough plot, said the critics. It grew to 2000 words. Now,to go back and make the language pretty again. To send to my Zoom-based critique group. So many steps before the first market gets to reject it.
My latest blog post--a riff on something I found in a Wired Magazine article. Enjoy!

A highly amusing alternate history/fantasy story. You think our current government is bad? See what dark arts Thomas Jefferson attempted.

Okay, finally back to finishing up my 2025 short fiction reading before submitting a Nebula ballot. I really liked this one. A bittersweet cli-fi relationship story by @chrisblake.bsky.social

Scott reviews "The Day We Said Goodbye to the Birds" by Allan Dyen Shapiro:
"I recommend this story for its incisive details, its well crafted character studies, and its ultimately hopeful tone."

Lots of us. I posted and then saw several others who did. It's getting more and more appropriate.
And if you're in the mood for a totally creepy and wildly creative sci-fi/horror flash piece:

And I'm back to my catch-up on 2025 short fiction reading. This one, by Lawrence M. Schoen is fun. A human librarian who shares Earth's literature with the universe's other sentient races and a pirate. A not-very-concealed comment on digital piracy.
Recommended.

Reminder: I'll be on B-Cubed Press's Facebook page at noon today as one of the guests on a show about why Americans are rejecting science and accepting nonsense. It should be a good discussion. If you can't make it, it gets archived.

"The Day We Said Goodbye to the Birds" is finally on the new SFWA Recommended Reading List. Any SFWA members who'd like to read it in advance of the March 1 Nebula ballot deadline, here's a direct link to the .pdf (works only when you are logged in to the SFWA site).

Sunday, February 8, noon (EST), I'll be one of two guests on B Cubed Press's weekly Facebook-based show. Our topic: why people believe RFK instead of actual scientists and their studies.
B-Cubed has published me twice.
I hope to see some of you in the chat!

My theory: Trump viewed the invasion of Minneapolis as preparing his shock troops for cold weather combat to be anticipated in Greenland. We'll see what happens. If he can't defeat Tim Walz and Jacob Frey, I'm not sure how well he'll do against the French and German defenders now heading north.
Amazon Prime has a really good, twisted horror movie: Good Boy. Not the 2025 American movie--totally unrelated. A 2022 Norwegian movie with subtitles. The acting was wonderful. I anticipated the penultimate scenes. The last scene was a total shocker. For those who like horror, enjoy!
Dark Rapture by Robert Gillham in the March 2025 issue of Cosmic Horror Monthly: Structured like the transcript to a biopic on a post-punk band that got deeply into eldritch pursuits, it was dead-on in format. And the horror builds in the way you'd expect with a Manson-like cult.
Another great 2025 short story well worth reading. Effie Seiberg is terrific at funny stories that nonetheless have a message to them. This one is a superhero story that focuses on disability accommodations. Enjoy!

More 2025 short fiction: this one reimagines the life of Alan Turing if he crossed into the fairy world and had a life long affair there. Gorgeous prose. Structured only by the events of Turing's life. Strongly recommended.

Okay, I'm back to catching up on 2025 short fiction reading. Zach Shephard's "From Darkness, Awake" ran in this anthology about Circe and has her taking on a drug lord in present-day Miami. I thought the blending of myth with crime fiction was creative.

A blurb: Gabriela is an eliminator, an assassin who travels through time, employed by NovartisKochHalliburton as part of their strategy to prevent the intercorporate wars and spare the world the devastation from bioweapons. She has an ulterior motive. And she loves '90s grunge music.
Exciting News! My #ShortStory "The Eliminator" sold to Water Dragon Publications. It will come out as a standalone both digitally and in paperback through all the usual outlets, likely in February.

Of course. Yep, I am that old.
Well, a lot better than the last time we spoke. I've been back to my teaching job since April. The cancer and meds are making me tired. I had to give up the union activism altogether and dial back the writing a bit. But it's a slow but steady improvement. Tumor is not growing, so for now, I live.
As I do every hundred new followers I get, here's celebrating follower #1400 (actually 1404 as of today). Here's the gif from Three-Body Problem (not my sentiment, but sort of what the universe tells us some days):
Just watched #strangerthings latest episode. Vecna's defeated not only the Soviet army but now, the US army. Eventually he'll lose to Winona Ryder and a bunch of teenagers. No, no relation to typical #fantasy here. The '80s after the mall is destroyed, on the other hand... Very imaginative.
