The History of Conspiracy Theories Surrounding the Founding Fathers and Freemasonry This article delves into the historical context surrounding Thomas Jefferson and the Freemasons, revealing how conspiracy theories plagued his reputation and political career. Beginning in the late 18th century, Freemasonry, a fraternal organization with a long history, gained prominence in American society. Simultaneously, distrust and suspicion arose, fueling rumors of a secret, potentially subversive agenda within the order. Jefferson, as a prominent Freemason and later as a political figure, became a target of these conspiracies. During the 1800 presidential election, his opponent, John Adams, leveraged these anxieties, accusing Jefferson of being influenced by the Illuminati, a shadowy group linked to Freemasonry, and falsely claiming he would free all enslaved people and had fathered children with an enslaved woman, Sally Hemings. These allegations, combined with accusations of immorality and anti-religious sentiments, were intended to undermine Jefferson’s credibility. While historians have largely debunked these claims, the episode highlights a recurring theme in American history: the intertwining of fraternal organizations, political maneuvering, and sensationalized narratives. The article traces the decline of Masonic influence in modern society and points to specific Philadelphia landmarks, like Tun Tavern and the Grand Lodge, as reminders of this tumultuous era. Despite the evolution of Freemasonry into a primarily philanthropic organization, the echoes of these historical conspiracies continue to resonate in American culture, offering a fascinating lens through which to view the complexities of early American politics and the enduring power of rumor and speculation.

"Man, once surrendering his reason, has no remaining guard against absurdities the most monstrous....

"With such persons, gullibility, which they call faith, takes the helm from the hand of reason, and the mind becomes a wreck."

I couldn’t finish this article on #ThomasJefferson and slavery. The book author mentions that he did not seem to be hostile towards slaves. Of course he wasn’t. They were his property. He was indifferent to them. He used them as he saw fit. #SallyHemmings is probably the best-known example of this.
