I’ve read and watched too many guides to count. While a lot of advice is rehashed and repeated (and in the case of things like ‘show, don’t tell’, often taken way too literally), this video has stuck with me for its take on impactful description:

My process:
1: Have a high-level idea that’s as much vibes as substance
2: Come up with a vague start, middle and end
3: Word-vomit characters onto the page
4: Harvest emerging flavour nuggets
5: Re-plot
6: Repeat
When it works, it works…

The closest I’ve come to this is the time he fell in the bath with the children (an adventure he immediately regretted).
Then there’s the mad dash around the house with a towel when he comes in after being caught in the rain.
The only time my cat’s moved today is to relocate to a new sleeping spot. Lazy, but likes variety I guess.

Equivalence came about while listening to a lot of Nine Inch Nails, primarily the albums ‘The Fragile’ and ‘With Teeth’.

It’s somber, melancholic, meandering and thought-provoking. There’s little action, and the plot’s secondary to the slice of life vignettes that make up the bulk of the scenes, but the end result is as imaginative as it is poignant.

I guess the follow up question would be: would you want to be replaced by another ‘you’?
I’m not sure if it’s my best, but it’s probably the one that best represents the MC and general theme:

I’m intending to go hybrid. Some manuscripts, like the one I’ve submitted to RevPit, will be fired into the query pits, while for others I’ll try going it alone.
I think the biggest barrier for the self-pub route (for me) is the cost. Covers, editing, web-hosting, ISBNs etc. all add up!

I think it’s just called ‘Sci-fi romance’, which is depressingly uninspired for a genre title.
But then, I can’t for the life of me think of anything better. And that irks me deeply on some fundamental level.
Whatever feedback I get, I aim to have it rejiggered for querying before the end of Summer.
I also have a sci-fi romance (Romanscifi?) draft in edit, a Romantasy idea itching to be written and an 80% complete Space Opera, all vying for my attention.
So I’ll not be bored 🤪
