State of AI 2026 Take the State of AI survey

The “State of AI 2026” survey just opened! This is run by the same folks who do the other "State of…" surveys, like JS, CSS, and React.

The goal is to understand how web developers are using AI. So, whether you use AI or not, please take a few minutes to fill it out!

This blog strips off for CSS Naked Day Half-a-dozen years ago, I proposed that web developers spend one day a year browsing without JavaScript. It's a great way to see how the web works when things break. Similarly, April 9th is CSS Naked Day. A chance to throw off the shackles of good design, and see the raw beauty of your HTML. Today is intended for websites to remove their own style sheets - as this blog has done. The idea…

Happy CSS Naked Day to all who celebrate.

CSS Day 2026, 11th & 12th of June, Amsterdam CSS Day is the conference for CSS designers, developers, spec writers, and browser vendors.

Went on the website for the CSS Day conference and that's how I found out it's CSS Naked Day. cssday.nl

Whenever I'm studying these days I tend to go down rabbit-holes from the main content and often it feels like I haven't made any progress 😅

"If you were to give a beginner one piece of advice, what would it be?

Learn to really, thoroughly and completely enjoy being shit at something. The process of learning is chaotic, nonlinear, and uniquely human. You’re getting stuck in and you’re deciding to learn a craft or technique for yourself. That is to be cherished and protected and loved."

This is good advice even for those with 20 years experience. Thanks for the reminder @scott.is 💛

Picked up the Complete CSS course again and started reading about progressive enhancement.

With device widths and internet speeds varying, it's the way to go to build for everyone first then more if it can be handled.

This is the thing about browsers: you can do pretty much whatever the hell you want and rightly so. There’s no stopping you from making your browser whatever size you want. There’s also nothing stopping you from installing whatever extensions you want either. Oh, let’s not forget users can literally write custom styles for websites. All in all, we have little to no control over what the user sees.

@bell.bz coined the phrase "Be the browser’s mentor, not its micromanager" in 2022 for a talk. He explains exactly what he means by that, and why he lives and dies by it as a CSS programmer, in this free lesson from Complete CSS.

🤯 TIL: "!important" in #CSS can have whitespace after the exclamation point! And not just that, but entire comments as well.

It makes sense. You should have to explain why you're using !important, and what better place than the middle of the declaration?

Write a LinkedIn post this evening about the A11y Together event and the fear of being perceived is real, all these views, likes, and reposts are pretty overwhelming.

Just one of those nights where my brain is whizzing away at thoughts, this time about a blog post so I jotted down some bullet points instead of sleeping. I'd love to be able to get it out into the world, we'll see.

There is the TetraLogical logo and a megaphone icon made up of an orange circle on the left where the sound enters, a muted purple cone for the body with a U-shaped handle on the bottom, and a bright pink oval on the right where the sound is amplified as it exits.
