Just a reminder that in computational biology and bioinformatics, we should NOT just translate the longest ORF in genomes but the most likely to be translated.

Our paper here details some of the pitfalls of you don’t. Be aware. Be warned.

I think it doesn't need to be public or publicly acknowledged. It's part of the academic work.

You've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?

I feel it's tied to a large extent to upbringing and past (childhood?) experiences.

Hear it from the students themselves:
🌿 "His job made me more interested in plants."
🌿 "Plants are something I take for granted."

I mean, the most read parts of a research paper are probably title and abstract.

Yet the outrage didn't arise when machines replaced expert carpenters or when cars replaced skilled coachmen. Why is that?

I agree with much of that yet I think one could replace AI with almost any technological advance in this essay. The price of advance is specialization and de-skilling.
Who of us can build their own house, grow their own food? Compared to humans even a few decades ago we are laughably unskilled.

Not sure it was wasted?
Did it help you to get where you are?
Are your manuscripts read and cited more frequently because of where they are published?
A system can be broken and useful at the same time.

Fig. 1 (shortened, full legend in paper): Growth differences between meristem regions underlies gynoecium initiation in Arabidopsis. (A) Schematic top view of the inflorescence showing initiating floral buds at different developmental stages (St) according to Smyth et al. (1990). (B) Time-lapse series capturing carpel primordia establishment from early stage 5 to late stage 6 over 72 h at 24 h intervals. Median sepals were removed. (C) Heat maps of Gaussian curvature at the different stages; the bottom row shows virtual longitudinal sections through the bud along its lateral axis. Increases in positive Gaussian curvature are indicated with white arrows (dark red zones in the top image). The blue arrows indicate a carpel primordium emerging as a lateral protrusion on the floral meristem. (D) Heat map of percentage area expansion between the stages. (E) Heat map of cell divisions between the stages. (F) Heat map of cell sizes at the different stages.

🌸⚖️ RESEARCH ⚖️🌸

Live imaging and hormone manipulation shows how auxin–cytokinin crosstalk drives differential growth at the cellular level in the gynoecium to establish the correct geometry for carpel primordia initiation – Gómez-Felipe et al.

I think at least for plants reading about the models is essential because they guide research in non models. Hence people are conscious they don't rediscover things but discover variations on a theme.

I thought it's the opposite: because of the enormous amount of data we have from model organisms we can branch out into other species and investigate the conservation or divergence of gene function there.
