🇬🇧 The UK plans to introduce voting at 16.
🇦🇹 Austria introduced it 18 years ago.

Reposting the thread summarising our recent research re-evaluating evidence on the Austrian case.

TL;DR: No big boost in engagement, but no harm either. Voting at 16 facilitates inclusion, and that matters in itself.

I had a wonderful time at #AERA 2025 in Denver! It provided incredible insights into current #emotions, #motivation, #intervention, and #civics education research. I am particularly thankful for many conversations and the opportunity to share research on motivational processes and development 😊

3️⃣ Finally, we were interested in feedback loops. Do career aspirations themselves affect future motivational beliefs?

➡️We show effects from reading-related career aspirations to German self-concept and from math-related career aspirations to math motivation, but no robust cross-domain effects.

1 year ago 0 0 0 0

2️⃣ How do associations to domain-specific self-concept and intrinsic motivation change over time?

➡️ We find stronger associations between intrinsic motivation and reading-related career aspirations at 16 compared to age 13, supporting an intensification of domain-specific associations.

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

➡️ Additionally, we find increasing stability of math- and reading-related career aspirations over time.

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

Based on expectancy-value and dimensional comparison theory we look into three questions:

1️⃣ How do math- and reading related career aspiration develop?

➡️ We show slight increases and identify students' domain-specific self-concept, interest, and achievement as predictors of initial levels.

In general, it might already help to include files for data processing in #OpenMaterial, particularly when working with secondary data.
Writing / revising code in such a way that it is understandable to others can already reveal possible errors.

I can only recommended anyone working with R (or any other statistics program) to utilize code review, e.g. among co-authors - four eyes are always better to discover blind spots or errors 👀👀

⬇️❗This is so crucial, we can all learn a lot from this exmple. I am glad I had @laurabronner.bsky.social reviewing my analysis code for this paper several times, and I think that's a huge asset of collaborative research.

A thread about being wrong:

5 years ago, we wrote a paper about how how newly enfranchised 16-year-olds vote in Austria. But we were wrong.

This year, @elisabethgraf.bsky.social, @schnizzl.bsky.social, Sylvia Kritzinger and I are setting the record straight: authors.elsevier.com/c/1juT5xRaZk...

Many thanks to @schnizzl.bsky.social @laurabronner.bsky.social and Sylvia Kitzinger for this great collaboration, it was a pleasure to work on the topic together!

➡️ I learned a lot during the work in this paper; not only about causal inference (which is still rarely used in (educational) psychology), but also about best practice for replication and code review to decrease the risk for errors during the analyses
