Just learned that French "os" (bone) is pronounced "os" in the singular and "o" in the plural and I don't know whether to love it or hate it

So, um... this is bad. Really bad. I looked at the letters that were translated by the AI, and the very first one I found was almost entirely hallucination. Thread:

How far back in time can you understand English? An experiment in language change

If you liked this experiment, I published a full piece today in the same vein: a text that gets 100 years older with every section, from a modern blog post to a medieval chronicle.

It's a single story spanning 1000 years of English. See how far you get.

Eu to no Goodreads e no StoryGraph 😆. To no Goodreads meio por inércia e porque é o mais usado, mas eu gosto que o StoryGraph tem umas resenhas mais visuais, CWs e uns gráficos legais

In Brazil, "convosco" and the second person plural in general is mostly found in Christian prayers nowadays (aside from formal terms like "Vossa Excelência")

In Spanish, “for you” is ‘para ti’, but “with you” isn’t ‘con ti’: it’s ‘contigo’ instead.

What’s this ‘-go’ doing there?

It’s a remnant of the same Latin word that gave us ‘con’.

So etymologically, ‘contigo’ contains this word twice: “with you-with”.

Hace tiempo me encontré este gráfico que expresa la relación entre los niveles del marco europeo de exámenes de lenguas y creo que expresa bien que la diferencia entre los niveles no es lineal.

Trees, like animals, can also experience albinism, though it is extremely rare.

jumpingjacktrash
the reason it's rare is because without chlorophyll, the plant can't get energy, and dies shortly after sprouting unless it has some other source of food. so if you see a plant as big as the one in the picture that doesn't have any green in its leaves, it's getting its nutrition from the roots of a neighboring plant of the same species, feeding on the sugars created by the other plant's photosynthesis.
albino plants are basically vampires.

heywetotheotherworld
For a long time, scientists thought they were parasites, and couldn't figure out why the bigger plants didn't release chemicals to kill them.
Turns out, the lil' ghost redwoods benefit their hosts by filtering toxins and acting as a sort of backup immune system.
They're vampires, and they're commensal, symbiotic mutualists!

wikipedia turns 25 today! the last unenshittified major website! backbone of online info! triumph of humanity! powered by urge of unpaid randos to correct each other! somehow mostly reliable! "good thing wikipedia works in practice, because it sure doesn't work in theory" - old wiki adage

CNN, se vocês acham que meu trabalho como tradutora da língua da Batatolândia é muito caro, pelo menos me contrate para revisar a tradução tosca de Google que voces fazem.

Assim evitamos traduzir o nome desse energúmeno, Steinmeier, para PEDREIRO.

Latin had six noun cases, but in all Romance languages except Romanian, nouns and adjectives only have one singular form and one plural form left. What happened?

This extra large infographic tells you how the Latin case system collapsed – and why it's the accusative case that lives on in Romance.
