«Topographic controls on asynchronous glacial maxima in the European Alps during the Late Pleistocene»
doi.org/10.1130/G539...
In this study lead by Dr. Elena Serra: we show that a major asynchrony in the local LGM of 2 major Alps glaciers does not have to be climate-related.

Congratulations Mélanie @melanieauffan.bsky.social ! 🎉👏👏
The Central England temperature record represents the longest series of monthly temperature observations in existence.
Recent temperatures there are over 1.5 degrees Celsius above the 1961-1990 average, and over 2 degrees above preindustrial values.

5 years ago...when we couldn't get into the lab due to COVID, I started compiling an Icelandic Ice Sheet geochronology database. Whelp, it's finally open for discussion on ESSD. Looking forward to see what we can collectively do with this: essd.copernicus.org/preprints/es... 🧪
Oooh look, a juicy new paper to settle down with and read with my morning tea.

Drumlins, flow-sets recording shifting ice flow patterns over Scandinavia, and constraining migration of the ice sheet's main divide. Check out our new paper (Butcher et al 2026) in Boreas. Masses of data downlands available
A new web interface for Berger et al's insolation calculator has been released. Check it out! django.elic.ucl.ac.be/berger/insol...
This seems to argue against the Hansen et al. argument for high climate sensitivity, as laid out in this paper: academic.oup.com/oocc/article...
New paper! I took a diversion to Earth and reconstructed the flow evolution of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet.

Antarctica’s future beyond 2100: high emissions drive major long-term ice loss. New study in Nature Communications by Vio Coulon and Ann Kristin Klose, showing that the fate of the Antarctic ice sheet, will play a decisive role in future sea level rise.

A climate deal without explicit language calling for a fossil fuel phaseout is like a ceasefire without explicit language calling for a suspension of hostilities.

Thanks Evan ! : ) Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it and some of the discussions in there: still so much that we need to figure out !
I'd like to thank all my co-authors at the University of Sheffield and beyond for their support, ideas, and contributions: Dr. Jeremy Ely, Prof. Chris Clark, Dr. Sarah Bradley, Dr. Rosie Archer, and Dr. Jiang Zhu. Its been great to work on this project together over the last 3 years : )
We modelled the evolution of the ice sheet from 24 ka to the present-day, using an ensemble (n=100) of Parallel-Ice-Sheet-Model (PISM) simulations at unprecedented resolution (5 km) evaluated through scoring against our ice-sheet-wide database of geological constraints on ice extent (PaleoGrIS).
New paper alert ! 🙂
Happy to share our new study published in The Cryosphere !

We modelled the evolution of the Greenland Ice Sheet from the LGM (24 ka) to the present and learned a lot on its former history and dynamics !

The increasing participation of fossil-fuel lobbyists in recent COP meetings is concerning. Climate solutions should be shaped by those committed to real progress, not by those invested in slowing it down.
The new UNEP report is out with the latest estimates of 2100 warming outcomes under current policies, NDCs, and net-zero targets. Here is how it compares to both the IPCC scenarios and other estimates (CAT and IEA, who will release their own updates soon!).

Great overview of this wonderful site we spent so many time studying! 🥰
The landform bottom L is a moraine complex deposited after a large RA onto the glacier ~10.7 ka

I'm not sure many folks realize just how persistent the warming from CO2 is.
Here is a set of 1000-year climate model runs (using FaIR) simulating one year of CO2 emissions (40 gigatons in 2020); a millennia later the world has not cooled back down!

i.e the Greenland Ice Sheet mass loss is accelerating and closely follows IPCC’s worst-case high emissions projections : with no signs nor any reasons for this acceleration to stop anytime soon
Hmmm this statement feels well disconnected from the last two decades of research on current and future Greenland-Ice-Sheet mass losses :

Unbelievable experience with the journal Palaeo3. Our manuscript was rejected because… they couldn’t find a second reviewer, and it had been in their system “too long” (7 weeks), according to the editor. In other words, just to preserve their review-speed metrics, they rejected our submission.
