I’m gonna miss my trusty Sunbeam F1 when my LightPhone III finally comes. I’ll be happy to have the better camera and directions app, but a flip phone is such a great conversation starter!

(That’s me DJ’ing at my kids wedding.)

Omg, this is some amazing art! I’d love an Alaska version of this. (Maybe a magpie or bald eagle for the colors?)

Fun fact: It’s a hemiparasitic plant that attaches to the roots of plants to get some of its nutrients, so apparently it can do well in a lawn setting if you cut it high enough. I’m thinking it should spread further if I let it go to seed.

Fun new plants coming up in my lawn. I've been mowing at the highest setting for about five years now, and it's allowing an increasing diverse collection of plants to thrive. I _think_ this is common eyebright. I hope this one spreads!

Out of curiosity, how unusual is that?

I just ordered six of these lovely 5" adhesive emblems from Black Heart Decals. The Tick has always been one of my spiritual guides, but particularly so in these difficult times.

That’s me in Kiana last year coaching for Skiku last year. What an amazing program! Life is crazy-full right now, but I’m starting to regret not signing up this year. And for anybody curious, here's info about Skiku: www.skiku.com/about/what-w...

Per ISER's recent presentation to Senate Education Committee: "After adjusting for geographic costs, Alaska's per pupil spending is 15% below the national average and has fallen consistently since 2017." And there's lots more great info in the presentation.

A poster Honoring Elizabeth Peratrovich. The poster is a beautiful drawing of Elizabeth Peratrovich surrounded by various Alaska flowers. A banner underneath her drawing reads Elizabeth Peratrovich Day February 16, 2025. "Elizabeth Peratrovich was a Tlingit activist whose efforts led to the passage of the Alaska Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945, the first civil rights legislation in the U.S. At a time when signs reading “No Natives Allowed” were common, she and her husband Roy Peratrovich fought against segregation and discrimination. Her passionate speech before the Alaska Legislature helped secure the law’s passage, breaking down barriers and paving the way for future civil rights advancements.

Her work significantly impacted Alaska Native political participation, yet challenges remain. Systemic barriers such as language access issues, geographic isolation, strict voter ID laws, and redistricting continue to disenfranchise Native voters. Many Indigenous communities still struggle with voting access, making continued advocacy essential. We celebrate Elizabeth Peratrovich Day on February 16th to honor her courage and to inspire ongoing efforts toward justice. Her fight is now ours, and ensuring fair voting rights for all remains a crucial battle. By advocating for better access and representation, we keep her vision of equality alive." https://narf.org/peratrovich-day/

Heading up that way for HS State races on Tuesday. (I coach for West.) And my youngest raced the UAF RMISA Invitational today. Can’t wait for some Fairbanks snow!

It’s good to see Protect Our Winters make it to Bluesky.

It's crazy to see these kind of podium finishes from Alaskan athletes! Given our tiny population, we're punching *far* above our weight on the national stage these days.

And credit to Gus for continuing to speak up on climate change: protectourwinters.org/alliance/gus...

Alaska Outdoor Reports

There’s a report on snowio.com from Wednesday of good skate *ski* conditions at Eklutna, with crystalline snow on top of the ice. Weather conditions have been steady enough since then that I suspect that's still the case. Maybe bring both skis and skates, and go with whatever looks better? :-)

Alaska has about 1,200 total probationary federal employees, representing about 10% of the federal workforce.

In comments to the #akleg, the steward of Alaska's federal employees union says that's about $88M in wages.

And I just stumbled into the Neil deGrasse Tyson interview as I was pulling into the driveway after coaching Junior Nordic. Local public radio is such a delight. :-)

Yowzers! I just finished listening Dave Waldron interview @neildegrassetyson.com and Aaron Slonecker (director of the Anchorage Museum Planetarium) on Hometown Alaska. Nice work, @alaskapublic.org.

Heya Todd! I’m a SMCM alumni (class of ‘93, philosophy) and was wondering anybody was managing Bluesky starter pack of SMCM profs or alumni. (As an aside, I’m also a fellow political independent, an Alaska politics nerd, and a RCV fan.) Thanks. :-)

How nerdy are you? I personally love static site generators like Hugo, Jekyll, and Eleventy. They’re much cleaner than WordPress, but they require a little technical knowledge to set up.

I’ve been to some CRAZY shows in my day. But nothing ever topped Bad Brains. I thought the audience would tear both the 9:30 Club and itself to shreds. (I know I left bloodied, bruised, and with a black eye.) That’s the most extreme level of Dionysian release I’ve ever experienced.

I’ve lived Up North for almost 30 years now. Hoar frost still seems like impossible magic to me. I’m awestruck every time.

She _does_ still live here. But in our defense, Alaskans don’t like her. When she tried to run for Alaska’s sole US House seat in 2022, she lost to Mary Peltola, a democrat.

West Yukon? NortherWester Territory?

1 year ago 3 0 0 0

not sure we can give you full Province status, what about Territory?

I live in Alaska. You can absolutely rename us West Canada if you let us join!

1 year ago 6 0 0 0

100% open! It even makes solid geographic sense. Just please return our mountain to it’s correct designation while you’re renaming things.

Well, you guys should probably decide if you _really_ want Alaska first. We’re decidedly NOT a blue state. But we’re not a normal red state, either. Things here are … complicated. But it’s the one place I can happily fit in as a moose-hunting-punk-rock-listening-lgbtq+-friendly-supernerd.
