For the first time since Stockholm Univ. was awarded UN observer status, a researcher (Prado Domercq) attended negotiations on a global treaty to end plastic pollution as part of the Scientists' Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty. @marleneagerstrand.bsky.social

We have a new publication. Thanks @dralexford.bsky.social for leading this work!
We are deeply impressed and inspired by the tireless efforts of the Scientists' Coalition. Their unwavering dedication to tackling plastic pollution and ensuring science remains at the heart of global decision-making is nothing short of remarkable. Onwards and upwards!
Over 400 signatories united in support of the OECD PFAS definition! 🎉The list of signatories is still growing. If you're working in the field—and especially if you're based in Latin America, Africa, South Asia, or Southeast Asia—sign here: lnkd.in/d9X-sBd2

Over the past few years, our PlastChem team has worked tirelessly to map the chemical complexity of #plastics. Today, we publish the findings in @nature.com. We hope this evidence propels the development of safer plastics to protect human health and environment. 1/4

🎉 A Historic Milestone for Science and Policy! 🧪📜
After years of tireless advocacy, collaboration, and global effort, we are thrilled to celebrate the establishment of the "Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution” (ISP-CWP).

Today we made history.
Countries have come together & agreed the new Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste and Pollution that will provide the 🌍 with robust, independent science.
Environmental multilateralism delivering again, #ForPeopleForPlanet.

Trump told reporters at the White House: “I don’t think plastic is going to affect a shark very much, as they’re munching their way through the ocean.” However, almost 2,000 peer-reviewed studies show that he is wrong.

We have reached the end of the OEWG’s work. To our delegation, it is clear that the conflicts happening around the world were reflected in the discussion rooms during OWEG 3.2.

As non-political observers and scientists, we see most of the tedious and lengthy deliberations as unsubstantive wordsmithing and find it inappropriate and irresponsible that political battles now dominate the process while the actual substance of the negotiations is lost www.ipcp.ch/news/punta-d...
🌍 Day 3 of the OEWG‑3.2 meeting in Uruguay
If you’re a gambler, then this is the meeting for you. Delegates and observers are taking bets on whether country delegates will come to sufficient agreement to allow the establishment of this new Science-Policy Panel.

📍 Tensions and Progress in the SPP Negotiations, and with time running short, the question remains: will this process give rise to a new Science-Policy Panel - or collapse under the weight of political impasse?
Read the IPCP briefing here: www.ipcp.ch/news/punta-d...
This new science-policy panel is a critical opportunity to rebalance the scales. Let’s not replicate old patterns. Let’s build a future where every country has the tools and voice to protect people and the planet from harmful chemicals and waste.
🛠️ Building a fair system means:
- Equitable access to data and research
- Strengthening institutional and technical capacities
- Funding for implementation, not just participation
- Respecting and integrating local knowledge
🔬 Science-based policies are essential, but they must be informed by diverse perspectives and realities. Countries facing limited infrastructure, funding gaps, or insufficient technical expertise cannot be left behind as global decisions are made.
🌍 As the international community gathers in Uruguay to negotiate the new Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention, one message must be loud and clear: low and middle-income countries need meaningful support to be full partners in this effort.
🌍A global science-policy panel can
✔️ Provide independent, science-based guidance
✔️ Identify emerging chemical threats
✔️ Enable global cooperation on transboundary pollution
✔️ Build trust through transparency and inclusivity
We need science, policy, and global coordination to work together. 🌐🧪

As the structure and scope of the Panel take shape, addressing Conflicts of Interest is essential. Involving experts with vested interests in the Panel’s core work poses serious risks - potentially leading to biased outcomes, compromised integrity, or delays in urgently needed action.
📍 Live from Uruguay!
IPCP is on the ground as the Science-Policy Panel negotiations resume. Our delegation is actively engaging in discussions around the role of science and civil society in the future panel on chemicals, waste, and pollution.

📍 The expectations for the resumed OEWG-3 meeting are high and low at the same time. High because this is the last round of negotiations, and low because nothing has been finally agreed upon yet.

In a new paper, 22 scientists—including Professor Ian Cousins and Associate Professor Marlene Ågerstrand at Department of Environmental Science @stockholm-uni.bsky.social —defend the current definition of PFASs established by the OECD. #PFAS #Chemistry
