Study: PFAS spill at Brunswick Landing could pose long-term environmental threats MAINE, USA — How has Maine's largest accidental spill of forever chemicals impacted Casco Bay? A two-year study tracking PFAS contamination—following the spill of about 50,000 gallons of firefighting foam at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station in August 2024—sheds light on its long-term effects. Although toxic chemical levels have decreased downstream of the spill, major concerns remain about long-term effects on the watershed. Over two years, scientists from Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences collected nearly 500 water samples and 45 sediment samples from 76 sites across the 1,000-square-mile Casco Bay watershed. Scientists found that the major release of toxic firefighting foam at the former Brunswick Naval was a serious environmental disaster. “This PFAS spill was like a heart attack to the system,” Ivy Frignoca, the head of Friends of Casco Bay and the nonprofit’s Casco Baykeeper, said. The toxic chemicals have been linked to serious health problems, including organ-related cancer and diabetes. Friends of Casco Bay partnered with the Bigelow Laboratory for the study. The results were released earlier this week. Levels of forever chemicals in shellfish in Harpswell Cove, downstream from the spill, rose to more than seven times the state's safety limit. State marine officials quickly closed...
