These snakes steal poison from their prey-here's how they know they have enough Red-necked keelback snakes are highly toxic—mere drops of their pungent yellow poison could blind a mongoose and stop its heart within minutes. But the snakes don’t make that toxin themselves; rather, they steal it from the poisonous toads they eat. After a red-necked keelback (Rhabdophis subminiatus) eats a true toad (a member of the Bufonidae family), the snake’s intestines soak up the toxic bufadienolide molecules from the amphibian’s skin. The toxins are then shuttled into more than a dozen pairs of storage pockets in the snakes’ necks called nuchal glands. Then the snakes act fearless. They rise and jut their necks at mongooses and other would-be predators as if to say, “Go ahead—I dare you.” That brazen attitude doesn’t last, though. If dinner has been nontoxic recently—poison-free frogs or fish, for example—these reptiles often hurriedly slither away. New Jersey firefighters take toxic PFAS firefighting foam off their shelves This story is part of the WHYY News Climate Desk, bringing you news and solutions for our changing region. From the Poconos to the Jersey Shore to the mouth of the Delaware Bay, what do you want to know about climate change? What would you like us to cover? Get in touch. Firefighting foam containing toxic PFAS chemicals have contaminated drinking water across the country for decades. The so-called “forever chemicals” have been linked to serious health problems, including some cancers. The state of New Jersey has partnered with the remediation company Revive Environmental to help fire departments and academies remove and destroy 150,000 gallons of the toxic foam. New Jersey is investing $16.6 million in state appropriations to fund the disposal of aqueous film forming foam, which it will ban in 2027. “We [used to] use it in car accidents on the side of the road, and then it goes into a ditch on the road, which goes into the waterway and we have the potential to contaminate a lot of things — now we don’t have that potential,” said Rob Gancarz, fire chief of the Jacobstown Volunteer Fire Company. PFAS, widely used in consumer products such as nonstick...

Toxic materials found in soil halts work on Brighton CSD construction project - Spectrum Noticias Toxins more than 100 years old found near Brighton High School are halting work on a nearly $22 million district capital project. Brighton CSD says contractors working to build new athletic fields at the high school discovered ash and cinders in the soil in January. The state Department of Environmental Conservation began soil testing in February and later confirmed the presence of mercury, lead and arsenic. Administrators believe those materials were left behind by the former Buckland Brick Manufacturing site, which operated there from 1830 to the 1920s. District leaders say they've contracted an environmental consulting firm to work with the DEC on a site management and community air monitoring plan. They're also evaluating a proposed turf cover system and options for removing that soil, some of which could cost up to $14 million. "For community members here, we will be coming back to the community to schedule forums and specifically going to the neighborhood streets around and with a mailer to invite people to learn more about the soil that is probably present at their property as well,” Brighton Central School District Superintendent Kevin McGowan said. The state DEC says there is a temporary cover system in place to...

'Toxic Tourist Destination': Rajasthan's 'Mini Switzerland' Attracts 20,000 Visitors, But Experts Warn of Danger What looks like a snowy landscape or a foreign tourist destination is, in reality, a massive marble waste dumping site in Rajasthan. Located in Kishangarh in Ajmer district, the area has become a social media hotspot, attracting thousands of visitors every day. Endless white plains glowing under the sun, no pine trees, no chill in the air, yet the scenery looks straight out of a winter postcard. Many confuse it for Bolivia's Salt Flats, snow-clad Gulmarg or even picturesque Switzerland. This scenic location, which has become a popular reels destination, is Asia's largest marble waste dumping yard in Kishangarh in the Ajmer district of arid Rajasthan. The dumping site, where over 700 tankers carrying around 22 lakh litres of marble slurry are emptied every day, attracts at least 5,000 visitors on a daily basis, with the footfall going up to 20,000 on weekends and holidays. Due to its pristine white appearance, the dumping yard, spread over 350 acres, has also become a popular destination for pre-wedding and commercial shoots. Environmentalists and health experts, however, have flagged it as not just a health hazard but also a pollution hotspot. Scientific studies conducted by the Central University of Rajasthan have flagged it...

Toxic Ocean Crisis in Papua New Guinea Sparks Mass Marine Die-Off and Public Health Emergency It started in December, when dead fish began washing ashore New Ireland—a mountainous island in Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland Province, flanked by the Pacific Ocean and the Bismarck Sea. At first, just a few fish scattered the beaches—mostly small bluestripe herring, which school in shallow tropical waters. Within a few weeks, they were landing in droves. By January, reports of the die-offs mounted across several coastal communities settled along the island’s east coast. Some residents reported they’d also developed severe rashes after coming into contact with seawater. As alarm spread, John Aini—founder of Ailan Awareness, a local Indigenous-led marine conservation non-government organization—set out with his team to investigate by visiting some of the affected villages. What he saw was worse than he could have imagined. “Hundreds and hundreds of fish littered the beach,” said the elder activist in his 60s. Most had no eyes, he said. “I’ve never witnessed anything like it in my entire life.” Over a five-day community monitoring period, Aini, his team and local residents documented nearly 3,500 dead marine animals onshore. Many more floated offshore, uncounted. At least 15 species of fish were identified. Dead octopus, eels, lobster, sea cucumbers and even a black tip...

#EarthHour2026: BAN Toxics Call for Environmental Justice amidst War and Crisis - Pressenza - International Press Agency Marking the 20th year of #EarthHour, environmental NGO BAN Toxics calls on every Filipino to move beyond the symbolic 60-minute switch-off, embrace energy conservation as a daily commitment, and recognize that conserving energy is more than a symbolic global movement—it is an urgent necessity in the face of a deepening energy crisis and environmental harm. World Meteorological Organization’s State of the Global Climate 2025 report confirms that 2015–2025 are the hottest 11 years on record, with 2025 ranking as the second or third hottest year at about 1.43 °C above the 1850–1900 average. The oceans continue to warm and absorb carbon dioxide emissions, about eighteen times the annual human energy use each year over the past two decades. The UN Secretary-General warns that the climate is in an emergency, with every key indicator flashing red. “We observe #EarthHour annually to remind us of our shared responsibility to protect the planet. Achieving this requires urgent, collective action across all sectors, coupled with greater accountability from corporations and governments. But how can we succeed while ongoing wars continue to intensify the environmental crisis?” said Thony Dizon, Advocacy and Campaign Officer of BAN Toxics. According to the Conflict and Environment Observatory, militaries are...

HEAL welcomes the proposal for a harmonised classification of a group of phthalates as toxic to reproduction and endocrine disruptors and calls for further regulatory act HEAL has submitted comments to support the proposal by France for a harmonised classification of ‘medium-chain ortho-phthalates’, a group comprised of 48 structurally similar phthalate substances. The harmful effects of several phthalate substances are widely known and commonly described as the “phthalate syndrome”, referring to a shared pattern of effects on the development of the male reproductive system. This pattern of effects has repeatedly led to the harmonised classification and/or identification as substances of very high concern (SVHC) of medium-chain ortho-phthalate group members in application of CLP and REACH. HEAL therefore warmly welcomes the French proposal to base the harmonised classification of the group of medium-chain ortho-phthalates on a category approach and read-across. This way the available information on substances with confirmed hazards is combined with the knowledge on structural similarities, common metabolites and toxicity patterns across the group to fill data gaps. We strongly support the addition of the proposed ‘Note 13’ to the classification entries, triggering the classification of mixtures and complex substances based on the sum of phthalates they contain. This reflects the current knowledge of the additive toxicity of the group members, due to a common target and similar mode of action for reproductive toxicity and...

Buntanetap: From Execution Poison to Potential Alzheimer's Disease Drug Deep in the forests of modern-day Nigeria and Cameroon, a vibrant ethnic group called the Efiks had a seed that could end a life in minutes. The pod of Physostigma venenosum, better known as the Calabar bean, determined whether a person accused of a crime was innocent or guilty, with innocence decided by survival. Crushed and mixed with water, the potion was given to the accused in this trial by ordeal, and those who vomited it walked free. The less fortunate ones would die after ingestion, proclaimed guilty as charged. When Scottish physician Robert Christison obtained specimens of the Calabar bean in 1855, he tested it, as Victorian scientists sometimes did, on himself, chewing a piece, experiencing its effects, and then quickly washing his mouth with water to avoid a fatal dose. His observations helped launch a pharmacological investigation that would span the next century and a half.1 In 1864, two chemists, Julius von Jobst and Oswald Hesse, isolated its active compound, physostigmine. Within decades, it was in clinical use for glaucoma. By the 1970s, researchers were wondering whether it might have more to offer. Today, researchers are studying a molecular descendant of that poison in clinical trials for Alzheimer’s...
