The harmful effects of several phthalate substances are widely known and commonly described as the “phthalate syndrome”, referring to a shared pattern of effects on the development of the male reproductive system. This pattern of effects has repeatedly led to the harmonised classification and/or identification as substances of very high concern (SVHC) of medium-chain ortho-phthalate group members in application of CLP and REACH. HEAL therefore warmly welcomes the French proposal to base the harmonised classification of the group of medium-chain ortho-phthalates on a category approach and read-across. This way the available information on substances with confirmed hazards is combined with the knowledge on structural similarities, common metabolites and toxicity patterns across the group to fill data gaps. When Scottish physician Robert Christison obtained specimens of the Calabar bean in 1855, he tested it, as Victorian scientists sometimes did, on himself, chewing a piece, experiencing its effects, and then quickly washing his mouth with water to avoid a fatal dose. His observations helped launch a pharmacological investigation that would span the next century and a half.1 In 1864, two chemists, Julius von Jobst and Oswald Hesse, isolated its active compound, physostigmine. A two-year study tracking PFAS contamination—following the spill of about 50,000 gallons of firefighting foam at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station in August 2024—sheds light on its long-term effects. Although toxic chemical levels have decreased downstream of the spill, major concerns remain about long-term effects on the watershed. Over two years, scientists from Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences collected nearly 500 water samples and 45 sediment samples from 76 sites across the 1,000-square-mile Casco Bay watershed. Scientists found that the major release of toxic firefighting foam at the former Brunswick Naval was a serious environmental disaster. “This PFAS spill was like a heart attack to the system,” Ivy Frignoca, the head of Friends of Casco Bay and the nonprofit’s Casco Baykeeper, said.
