I asked researchers around the world about how to listen better to the climate crisis, and turn our ears back towards the living Earth.

Thinking about devastating cuts to NSF: US gov-funded science has been the engine upon which most of the tech wealth was generated. But the oligarchs (currently hoarding much of that $) think it’s their own brilliance & not the accident of standing close to the scientific engine that made them rich.
A huge crowd of people enjoy beautiful weather in a wonderful city park.
A nurse log bike and praying mantis make their way down a street
A beautifully painted snail built around a tricycle makes its way down the May Day parade
A giant heart with flowers growing out of it and costumed people walking around
I absolutely love May Day in Minneapolis. Such a time of joy, celebration, and creative energy.
Truly the kind of event that makes a place feel special.
I’m recruiting a PhD student in macrogenetics at Dalhousie University 🇨🇦! Focus will be on the biogeography of vertebrate genetic diversity or urban evolutionary ecology.

Screenshot of table showing number of grants and total value terminated by NSF directorate. STEM Education directorate is highlighted, with 417 terminations totaling 322 million dollars. CSV of table: Directorate,No. Terminated,Total Value Biological Sciences,46,"$27,960,075" Computer and Information Science and Engineering,85,"$44,630,113" Engineering,94,"$33,472,485" Geosciences,52,"$36,454,740" Mathematical and Physical Sciences,30,"$6,418,312" Office of the Director,7,"$4,859,738" STEM Education,417,"$322,680,063" "Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences",266,"$77,635,904" "Technology, Innovation and Partnerships",46,"$62,231,309"
UPDATE: We have data on >1000 terminated #NSF grants at grant-watch.us. Thanks to all who have been contributing data the past few days.
We've also added a "Reports" section with some analyses. For NSF, we see that the STEM education directorate has been absolutely pummeled.
A flat, colorful print that reads "Avert Catastrophe! Home is where your cat should be"
Avert Catastrophe jumbo postcard prints are back in stock!
Personally, I love how loud and ridiculous they sound when flying in a large group. It is very insect-like (a good thing)
A flat green beetle with a pair of small eyes peeking out from under the pronotum and a pair of antennae emerging at the same spot. Two cute beetle feet can also be seen reaching out from under the pronotum. It is walking around on a plant.
A snazzy beetle with dark green elytra edged in yellow. It is standing on a leaf.
A bright green beetle with gold antennae. It is clinging to a plant stalk and has a fruit fly sitting on its back.
A light green beetle clinging to the bark of a tree.
Here are some lovely green beetles for St Patrick's Day. ☘️
Thistle Tortoise Beetle (Cassida rubiginosa) Pennsylvania; (Dircema sp.) Ecuador; (Tribe Doryphorini) Ecuador; (Platycoelia sp.) Ecuador
My proudest accomplishment to date.
The work continues!

shared a bit of my experiences being trans in STEM a bit ago, excited to see the article out!
and cis folks: the statistics here are from *before* the current dumpster fire, just for context. so just imagine for a second how much worse things are now

@ssenese.bsky.social. I will be speaking on academic freedom, drawing inspiration from MIT scientist Vannevar Bush's "Science the Endless Frontier," and @biologycarly.bsky.social recent @chronicle.com article: www.chronicle.com/article/the-...
We are experiencing an assault on science unparalleled by anything I’ve seen in my life. It’s not one issue or another anymore, the entire institution is under attack by the most powerful individuals in the country.
This Friday, where will you be?

This is, in fact, Lysenkoism 😭
These people have spent years saying the cancellation of college lectures was a slippery slope to totalitarianism. Now that marginalized minorities are losing their rights — literally the Niemöller poem — it's just an oopsie with no broader implications.
Join us at the Mountain Research Station this summer!
The right wing attack on transgender people was already evil, but the attack on transgender members of the military is INSANE. It's never been about a random NCAA swimming meet or anyone getting cancelled over a slip of the tongue on pronouns. It's about good old fashioned HATE.
If you are in CO and interested in speaking at this Stand Up for Science rally, send me a message

It’s probably a good day to explain to your non-scientist socials that graduate students are not merely the next generation of academic science, they are an important component of the current scientific labor force. Feel free to mention that this is cut rate labor as well.
NEW: On Section 504. "Attacks on any one group will be used as a wedge to attack all of us. You may not personally know any trans people, and you may even be uncomfortable with the idea ... but letting this attack go forward will eventually hurt you and the things you love, too." /1
Public comment is now open for passport gender marker changes.
You can go here to go to each of the three proposed passport rules, and submit comment.
My suggestion: be unique, argue for trans-inclusive policies, against the constitutionality of the changes, etc.

Firing experts 🧪 who can identify agricultural pests 🐛 early on might not be the best thing if you really wanted to lower food prices. But maybe that was never the point ...
A square canvas. Only the top corner is filled with Harings distinctive figures, rendered in Lavender, the rest is blank.
Keith Haring died of AIDS aged 31 on 16 Feb 1990.
One of his last works, Unfinished Painting, was deliberately incomplete, reflecting the devastating, unquantifiable loss to the arts due to AIDS.
