The Marvel Comics/Combos promotional icon, Combo Man, webslinging/flying through a sea of exploding Combos. Combo Man is a combination of 14 of, like, 1993's "hottest"(?) Heroes and villains in a crazy look. Sorry, vision impaired friends, it's too hard to describe.

Special commission for a longtime supportive and loyal Patron. I’ve always kinda wanted to draw Combo Man, and a 4×6 black and white card wasn’t gonna cut it. Combo Man was a promotional ad in 90s Marvel Comics for the snack food Combos. If you guessed all 14 characters that made up Combo Man, you got blahblah. I’m a Combo loyalist (Pizzeria are my go-to). I love Marvel Comics. This wormed a special place into my brain. However until the beginning of this month, there were 2 sections of Combo Man that I could never guess, and finally looked them up. Elbows & lower abs, and lower thighs above the knees.

In the original ad, Combo’s elbows & lower abs were just a plain dark red heavily shadowed area. My instinct would have said Daredevil, but his was in his Black Armor phase at the time, as represented by the forearms & waist. Otherwise it could be anybody. Turns out? Carnage. I don’t know where they cobbled the art from, but the original ad looks like no version of I’d ever seen. He was always squiggly, messy, and gooey. This was just… nothing. The lower thighs, with white squares… I had no idea. Upon discovering that it was the beloved Avenger “Century”, my reaction was “whodafuck?”. Who is this nobody tool? How did he rate a piecd of the Combo Man glory? Anyway. I’ve been snacking on Combos for the last two weeks.

While I mentioned last month that I find certain characters difficult because of the artist’s style and how ingrained it can be to the specific character, I found Popeye relatively easy and more adaptable to interpretation. I pulled a lot from the Robin Williams portrayal for this. It was pretty fun. I’ve never drawn Popeye before. At least not since I was like 6 years old, anyway. Great episode guys, even if ya poo poo'd on a fav of mine. It is completely understandable however with the near zero context you had for Ultraman and tokusatsu (the genre in question) in general. The movie is pretty much like reading Watchmen without ever having read a superhero comic book before.

I don't remember what the problems were, but I'm sure we handled them like the consummate professionals we are.
