Keith reaches for his hand and smiles and it's so beautiful. Shiro knows his answer without words and he huffs a small laugh at the way Keith's face transforms into something soft.

Keith squeezes his fingers and quirks a smile, his eyes still damp.

"Took you long enough."

"I love you, Keith," Shiro says quietly, laying his heart on the table. "I always have. If there's anyone I want to go on a date with... It's you."

Keith sits with that for a moment, but as the shiny dampness in his eyes grows, the heavy weight Shiro had been carrying around lightens.

He meets Keith's gaze steadily, unflinchingly, like he has a million times before, but this time he doesn't keep his emotions locked behind a door. He allows it to shine in his eyes, the love, the gratitude - and Keith, as in tune with him as always - inhales sharply, his eyes widening.

"No," he shakes his head. "No, Adam and I.. you remember how it was before I left."

There's a flash of fire in Keith's eye and Shiro knows he's remembering his front row seat to his break up with Adam. It hadn't been Adam at the launch. Only Keith.

Shiro doesn't know where his thoughts go until Keith's expression turns sympathetic.

"Oh," he says softly. "Adam."

For a moment, Shiro freezes, waiting for the same familiar surges of guilt and pain to wrap their tendrils around his heart, but they don't come. He's put those ghosts to rest now.

"I'm not," Shiro finally says, and for a moment he has to pause and sit with the new emotions unfurling inside his chest. How had he been so blind for so long? Keith's been here all this time. "He's not the one I want."

Keith's surprise quickly dies behind a sobering realization.

& Keith's eyebrow raises a little higher, his smile is wry even if something is clouded in his eyes.

"That bad, huh? He seemed nice enough. Sorry it didn't work out."

The last part Keith says with genuine feeling. It's Keith all over. Wanting what's best for Shiro no matter how much it hurts him.

He loves him so much, he always has, but now he wants him to. He wants to hold Keith's hand and kiss the scar on his cheek, brush back his hair and stare into those violet hued eyes the colour of galaxies-

For the first time in his life, Takashi Shirogane's words get stuck in his throat.

Shiro doesn't speak immediately but Keith watches him warily in that quiet way of his.

"I thought you were on a date?"

There's no accusation in his tone, it's measured and mild and Shiro experiences a flash of pride at how far Keith has come over the years.

And god. Shiro loves him.

-as though reaching for Keith. Always reaching. So he sighs & cuts the date short. Kinda stupid of him to think he could ever compare to what Shiro has with Keith.

And Shiro leaves Curtis to look for Keith and he finds him alone, as usual, save for Kosmo who licks his hand in greeting

And Shiro suddenly realizing it wasn't Curtis he wanted to be on a date with, it was Keith.

And Curtis, to his credit, wasn't a total idiot. He's seen how Keith & Shiro are around each other. He watches how Shiro stares after Keith, how Shiro doesn't even realize his arm has wandered further away

Keith had hid his feelings so well that if it hadn't been for the momentarily flash of pain in his eyes when they bumped into each other leaving Hunk's little eatery, if Shiro hadn't been so intimately aware of every nuance of Keith's reactions from a lifetime of loving him, he might have missed it

Sometimes, Shiro gets especially emotional, thinking about how he almost missed it - how he was so desperate for some kind of domestic normalcy that when Curtis asked him on a date after they defeated Honerva and saved realities, he said yes....

What a great day to think about Shiro and Keith living their best lives and more in love than ever 🥰

Every day they look at each other and remember how hard they had to fight for each other - and how it was 100% worth every bit to have what they have now. #sheith
