You can mess a kid up more by being an inconsistent, unpredictable parent than by being a fully absent one.

Doctor Naomi Dow, standing on stage, talks in front of a screen. She has long red hair, and wears a purple top and black midi-skirt. The screen shows the following visible text: Psychology: a very good place to start. Accepting change is hard. What do we need? Psychological safety, humility, logical information. When we know better, we can do better!

This biased approach to decision making is largely unintentional, and it results in a person ignoring information that is inconsistent with their beliefs".

One of the many cool things at this conference: a frank discussion about the importance of challenging assumptions and biases in the pursuit of better science and more beneficial outcomes. An important discussion for many, many contexts. (She says, not looking at anyone specifically…)

Yes! Name the systems of power. The neuronormative paradigm is one of THE systems of power yet it has gone unnamed.

The history of schooling is the history of the neuronormative paradigm and neuronormative domination.

Wake: The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts - Wikipedia

Just finished reading final student reflections after my AfAmStudies students finished reading “Wake” by @wakerevolt.bsky.social

This book hits so hard; both the stories of women-led revolts and the story of the persistence of Dr Hall inspired my students.

Y’all should read this book. #APAFAM 🗺️

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: if it matters to your organisation, you have to fund it like it matters. If you don’t consistently dedicate resources to engaging the autistic community as an autism research institution, it shows in your output. We see it, and you.

Also: still autistic, still incredibly lucky to be one of the 22(ish)% of uni-educated autistic adults in employment, but no longer working in autism research because I couldn’t find a single community engagement role hiring, and even if I could’ve, I was unbelievably burnt out by the experience.

Right now I am on a train to my org’s annual conference, having left coordination of the kids with Olí (mostly) and their other parent (somewhat), and taking a moment to feel grateful and so, so loved. Olí met me at the station with my suitcase, a coffee, and a kiss. I can go be good at my job now.

Other good things have happened - we’re in the process of buying a house, which we will be renovating to our preferences. Arthur’s back on a football team (though has switched to goalkeeper?!) and I’m gonna start Evie in theatre in the new year. Life keeps on doing life things, as it does. 2/3

Been a while, but: hi! I took a break from social media while dealing with unemployment and immigration systems and the mental health stuff that accompanies those things. The state of things now: kids are both back in the UK and on my visa! I’m employed (at UNICEF, even!) and mostly functional! 1/

I need you all to know that there is a very specific era of Hoosier Millennial who grew up with the Pacers-Knicks rivalry and is watching all of this unfold with genuine childlike wonder.

It’s great cause we’re not yet the age where this is bad for our hearts.

An edit of the "Don't Make Me Tap The Sign" meme from The Simpsons saying "Corporations do not care about you and you should support independent queer artists and creators and give them your money instead of these companies who will end up fucking them over because they don't care about the LGBTQ+ community"

Alexander Skarsgård on Murderbot
Alexander Skarsgård on Murderbot YouTube video by In Creative Company

This is a really fun interview with Alexander Skarsgård about Murderbot. Fun insights into his interpretation of the character. Mad props to him for being 100% consistent about Murderbot's "it" pronouns, and you can watch the interviewer picking it up. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGxK...

Just wrapped up my last day working as Autism Community Engagement Coordinator at the ARC at the University of Cambridge and I’m having some Big Feelings about a lot of it. Three years is a long time to work anywhere these days, and I’m nervous (and excited) for whatever comes next.
