Here’s a random thought: How many just willfully β€˜trust’ A.I. models without questioning how it was trained, yet DEMAND every educator to justify EVERY SINGLE decision we make in pedagogy, assessment, or general practice? #EducationSky #HigherEdSky

Universities and the Coming Storm It’s difficult for colleges to defend democracy if they aren’t run democratically.

Sobering but a reflection of many convos I've had in the last year:

"I used to joke with colleagues that higher education is besieged on two fronts: by fascists on one side and neoliberals on the other. As we look ahead to a second Trump administration, these two threads appear ready to converge."

Language is Not the Problem, Racism is the Problem – Demystifying Language Project Students of color are always being told that they need to change the way they speak. But what if, instead, educators changed the way they listen?

Jonathan Rosa and I had the amazing opportunity to work with an undergraduate student and a high school student to "translate" our "Undoing Appropriateness" article for high school students. The final product is available for free here:

As an Associate Dean for Research, I don't think people are prepared for how dramatically the funding landscape is going to change with the new administration. Some things I've been thinking about:

The unilateral ability to make decisions to change course titles, descriptions, content (and more) is precisely what this year’s TX legislative session will attempt to codify. Buckle up.

β€œThere needs to be accountability,” he said, arguing that as Republican president-elect Donald Trump β€œreins in the rogue administrative state … Texas should lead by example.”

Asked how he would respond to faculty concerns about the loss of academic freedom, Harrison remained unmoved.

β€œOnce I get done laughing, I would remind them that it is the people of the state of Texas that fund our public universities, and they are overtaxed, and they’re sick and tired of having their tax dollars weaponized against them and their values,” he said.

Higher ed faculty: Here is a reminder that academic freedom arguments aren't going to win over legislators. Our system of autonomy and tenure (often in exchange for below private sector salaries) makes no sense to them.
