For perspective: a recent study suggested that economic savings from just a *single* well-predicted hurricane, thanks to NOAA research advancements, are on order of *$5 billion.* That exceeds NOAA's *entire proposed annual operating budget.* So much for government efficiency.

Today I submitted the final report for my CAREER award granted after my start at @buearth.bsky.social. The project advanced our understanding of biosphere-atmosphere-chemistry interactions, funded so many trainees, and supported major expansions of the curriculum in our department. Thank you, NSF!

It's rather interesting, and immensely heart warming, to see how many Americans are posting congrats about the Canadian election. Haven't seen that before, but I understand why. And so many say "elbows up." It's nice when your friends get you.

I’m increasingly convinced that the love that powers long term climate action grows out of all the time we spend doing the things we love, in the places we love, with the people we love.

Without that, what are we fighting for?

For the #agu24 podcast listeners looking for recs during their travels, I highly recommend "The Big Dig" (www.wgbh.org/podcasts/the...) by @iancoss.bsky.social. It's genuinely enjoyable and also has some important lessons for those of us working in climate-risk management

The biggest divide here is the Charles River... Crossing over into Cambridge is somehow a rarity whose frequency is only exceeded by AGU attendance.

Another #AGU24 tease... I'm excited to share success we've had with ground-based remote sensing at four sites across the Boston area. Our Pandora network helps us carefully interpret unprecedented tropospheric pollution mapping from the TEMPO satellite instrument. Big effort with many collaborators.

A modest proposal for Elon and Vivek: Improve what’s already efficient Government efficiency is not measured in how many jobs you cut or how many agencies you eliminate.

My slightly tongue-in-cheek commentary ⬇️ reflecting on DOGE and what it means to have an efficient government

(My take - investing in public health and other programs that improve health and well-being, especially when they save $, is the poster child of efficiency)

In preparation of the AGU mtg in 2 weeks, I've been making some TEMPO NO2 animations using the Beta data. Here's an animation for the most polluted ozone day in the mid-Atlantic last summer (Aug 1, 2024). Also can see wildfires out West and most of the largest cities. I could stare at this all day!
