#SocialSafetyNet interventions fight #poverty. But they also 💫 empower #women. A new study with participation of HfP Professor @jisteinert.bsky.social, based on data from over 200,000 women, finds that: Especially, unconditional 💵 cash transfers can advance #GenderEquality. 🌈 @tum.de @nature.com

What is needed:
➡️Increased awareness of economic abuse
➡️Gender-egalitarian legislation
➡️Culturally sensitive interventions
➡️More longitudinal research on economic abuse
Key findings:
✔️Economic abuse includes refusal to contribute financially, restricting access to shared housing, bride price and dowry-related tactics & exploitation of women’s labor
✔️Marriage practices & patrilocality are key risks
✔️Economic abuse leads to poor health & financial hardship

The NIH is cancelling dozens of grants involving vaccines, including a project that studied whether the COVID vax is safe for breastfeeding mothers. mRNA vaccine research is next on the chopping block. Story @science.org www.science.org/content/arti...

Some history and philosophy of science about into why this matters- traditionally medical and biological research has studied male animals much more than females. To this day there is still a skew 1

❌We do not observe greater violence in states with higher mobility reductions, lower day care capacity for childcare or higher COVID-19 infection numbers
✔️But our cross-sectional household-level data suggests that home quarantine & financial distress may have been triggers of violence

What we find:
➡️Requests at helplines increased significantly by 34% with the first lockdown
➡️Requests at shelters increased by 14% only after the lockdown
👉This means: Women substituted ambulatory care with helpline calls during the lockdown

Very important work on #ethics in #fieldresearch. We have to establish adequate structures and standards to ensure #equity and #safety in international research, and, importantly, we need funders to allow for, even demand these structures.

We propose solutions at structural, project, and individual levels to ensure staff wellbeing, improve ethical integrity, and enhance data rigour
Based on 57 semi-structured interviews with research staff across hierarchies (data collectors, PhD students, PIs...) and world regions, we identify structural, country, and individual-level challenges leading to ethical failures like insecurity, distress, and exploitation
Out today in World Development Perspectives: Our paper on #ethics & #equity failures faced by research staff collecting data in LMIC contexts

An estimated 300,000 people standing up for democracy in Munich today ❤️❤️❤️
Received a letter from POTUS today purporting to remove me as Commissioner and Chair of the FEC. There's a legal way to replace FEC commissioners-this isn't it. I've been so fortunate to serve the American people and stir up some good trouble along the way. That's not changing anytime soon.
