Process evaluations can be independent studies or conducted simultaneously with outcome evaluations such as RCTs. They examine the processes through which an intervention generates outcomes.

Process evaluations are really important in helping to understand how (oral) health interventions work.

They are particularly useful for interventions that include a number of interacting components operating in different ways & also when interventions address complex problems.
