Original post on metalhead.club

I am slowly getting disillusioned about scientific publishing and rigor. I just got a note from google scholar that one of my articles has been cited. Looking it up, they made our "these reasons were named regularly in these categories" into "these categories enable these reasons".

This is […]

I really wish more plant scientists, and especially influential big name plant scientists, would publish with eLife.
Their new publishing model is a fantastic way forward and to get us out of the #ScientificPublishing mess we have gotten ourselves into and to which we claim we are held hostage.

The main problem are the Scientists who continue to publish with such journals, using the lame cop-out that they need it to have a career. Nobody(!) needs a NatComs paper to have a career. They want the Nature logo on their paper to feed their ego. That's all.

SILICE: Spain's Pioneering Open Scientific Information System Based on Non-Commercial Sources The article critiques the commercialization of scientific information systems, highlighting how private publishers and databases like Web of Science, Scopus, and Dimensions profit from research produced by publicly funded scientists who receive no royalties. This model transfers public money to private companies and compromises scientific independence by prioritizing commercial interests over objective evaluation. The author explains that traditional metrics, such as journal impact factors and simple citation counts, have distorted research assessment, encouraging quantity over quality and contributing to issues like paper mills, citation farms, and predatory practices. Initiatives like the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), the Leiden Manifesto, CoARA, the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information, and Spain's National Strategy for Open Science call for shifting to non-commercial, open infrastructures that rely on sources like Crossref, PubMed, OpenCitations, and OpenAlex. In response, SILICE (Sistema de Información sobre la Literatura Científica Española) has been developed as Spain's first fully open scientific information system. It includes over 3 million publications, 40 million citations, and 117,000 authors, enabling searches by authors, organizations, journals, and disciplines. Users can claim or create author profiles using ORCID and OpenAlex data, and access indicators for production, impact, and collaboration at various levels. This tool supports scientific tracking, evaluation, and dissemination free from private interference, aligning with the principle of scientific disinterestedness and promoting community-governed, transparent research assessment.

The rise and fall of peer review Why the greatest scientific experiment in history failed, and why that's a great thing

A great article on peer-review. #scientificpublishing

Given how much profit journal publishers make, is it asking too much to check that the title of a paper is correct? Here's the link for anyone interested:

It's the misplaced apostrophe that's annoyed me.
