I suspect the government is going to get another crash course in the law of unintended consequences when pushing through overly restrictive knee-jerk policies without properly considering implications, especially, but not limited to, students with higher support needs.

Delighted to share this from my friend and colleague Ayhan Alman at @thrivingautistic.bsky.social !

✅ Free Speech: When GCs who had no relation to my University complained to try and get me kicked off my course
❌ Not Free Speech: Exercising one's right to peaceful protest against those advocating your exclusion from society – on the campus you have to live and work in
This is the worst ongoing scandal in the uk imho. It's been proven in a series of places such as Shrewsbury and Leeds, that there's a 'natural birth' ideology that's killing mothers and babies
Just because I always feel I have to clarify lol, this was a joke I'm not actually bothered. Not in academia for the money and not like I genuinely thought a book analysing the language of some niche group on Reddit would be a worldwide bestseller 😅
I tried a few months ago and they said I wasn't eligible 🤷♀️
Also from Benjamins? I had a good chuckle at receiving a whole invoice for the grand total of £0.00 😂
Only 148 copies to go and then I can start raking it in 💰
I also use a Dutch oven, so it's a case of putting one at the same time as I add the dough
Received my first royalties statement from my book earlier today. Sourdough looking ever more appealing....
Come and work with me! ICYMI: I'm advertising a fully funded PhD studentship at Aston in cognitive stylistics, starting in October 2026
Details are also now up on the university website --www.aston.ac.uk/study/courses/re-reading...
Any questions, please get in touch
Looks delicious! I've tried doing crumpets with the discard but they did not turn out well 😅
That's so kind to say, thank you!
It's luck honestly, sometimes it makes an ear sometimes it doesn't even if I swear I'm doing the same thing. I try for a deep score, at about a 45 degree angle following the curvature of the loaf. I also have better luck if I pop an ice cube or two in there to create more steam in the oven.
My grey and white tuxedo cat giving a boule of sourdough a sniff
Damn, did not expect this to get more than 3 likes. And I didn't even include my cat giving it the seal of approval!
A freshly baked loaf of sourdough bread. it is lightly dusted with flour and has an 'ear' at the top.
Getting back into making sourdough again in case the academic career doesn't work out
When you drop a bomb on civilians, I think that’s murder. I don’t really care for any justifications. They’re people. The enormity of the loss is devastating and it’s easier for some people to look away. But for other people, that’s their family. Their children. It’s just sickening and so wrong.

What has happened to our society that we think it is right to remove children from their friendship groups?

She's not just a creator who happens to be a bigoted arsehole. She's a really proactive participant in Scottish and UK political debates, who uses her private wealth to muster forces enacting actual real world political change for the worse. She is not just a rich writer, she is an oligarch
I think a key problem with the whole Harry Potter thing is that some people, especially Americans, underestimate severely the degree to which Joanne K Rowling is an actual political actor.
Every now and then we post a round-up of research that's been published mentioning monotropism in recent months. As more and more is published, this becomes a harder and harder task! This one only takes us to last December.

The surprising social life of sharks hit the headlines this week, thanks to new research supported by Lancaster researchers. They discovered that bull sharks form relationships with specific “friends”, rather than mixing at random

flyer about What's going on in module cuts at queen mary showing that they would plan to cut 295 modules across to the school of the arts. What students can do: talk with tutors, lecturers, and professors. Demand a stop to the violnet actions and join upcoming school-wide meetings with staff and students
The cuts. They cuts are never-ending. And they're cutting away what it means to be a university.
