I just sent the final email with a note of thanks to the #DigitalPalates conference participants, so now it feels like the event is properly over (though admin business like paying bills and taking care of keynote speaker reimbursements and bursary payments continue). What a fea(s)t! 🍩🍩🍩
To use @sofiaruediger.bsky.social words: what a delectable #DigitalPalates conference! 🥨 🥩
I shared work Elina Vrijsen & I are doing on #veganmeat TikTok comments, which ended up winning an award! 🏆
Also loved reconnecting with wonderful food media scholars, thanks so much to the organizers!
Such an inspiring, though-provoking #DigitalPalates conference at @freieuniversitaet.bsky.social. Great papers, great colleagues, amazing organizers @sofiaruediger.bsky.social, Rita Vallentin, Ryan Fountain.
Congrats again to the best lightning talk winners @ #DigitalPalates 🏆⚡️
Paula Zenker with "'I think they just inhale air for meals': Constructing Community in EDtwt" (runner up)
Elina Vrijsen & @pauliendecorte.bsky.social with "Online Discourse Surrounding Meat Alternatives on TikTok" (first prize)
On the way back from #DigitalPalates with memories of a wonderful conference I”m awed by Berlin culinary variety on offer to eat on the go. Brezeln, Franzbrötchen but also Pasteis de Nata, baguettes 🥖 Lütticher Waffeln 🧇 Marzipan croissants 🥐 & the inimitable Dijon Croissant (with ham & mustard)
Flowers and my name tag
And just like that, #DigitalPalates is over! Thank you everyone for coming to Berlin and making this such a lively event 🙏 I'm going to go and sleep for 24 hours now...at least 😅
Last #ZuckerRush of #DigitalPalates - another favourite: Ahoj-Brause, a fizzy powder beloved by generations of German school kids, particularly the very peculiar Waldmeister (woodruff) taste ⛵️ Now looking forward to the last keynote by Keri Matwick (NTU Singapore) on digital culinary nationalism
We're ending the full talks with Angeliki Tzanne on self-praise in Greek food blogs. Quite some self-praise in the comments is by the food bloggers themselves; food blog visitors often first praise the blogger, then themselves

We're watching dogs 🐶 and alpacas 🦙 eat food and perform taste tests in Riitta-Liisa Valijärvi's talk on "More-than-Human Animals as Food Tasters on Social Media". Definitely the cutest videos I've seen throughout all of #DigitalPalates
it's the final panel of #DigitalPalates already 🫨 we're listening to Katie LeBesco & Susan Ericsson on "Constructing 'Food Noise': Embodiment, Eating, and Ideology on TikTok" - GLP-1 is constructed as the restoration of control, optimization, and self-moderation
English Linguistics @uni-saarland.de on tour at #DigitalPalates - with analog props 🍟🍔
Chi-hua Hsiao sets us up for a healthy lunch break with her talk on "the Healthy Eating Plate" method - in her research she looked at online health communities in Taiwan drawing on digital ethnography
#DigitalPalates
Impressions from last evening’s “Concrete and Currywurst” at #DigitalPalates - a walk through the former West Berlin city center which concluded, quite fittingly, with currywurst & beer at Wittenbergplatz 🌭 (we really need a currywurst emoji, @unicode.org )
here's the book of abstracts for #DigitalPalates in case anyone wants to look a bit more closely at some of the talks mentioned here: www.geisteswissenschaften.fu-berlin.de/en/we06/digi...

I almost missed out on this treat from the #DigitalPalates coffee break - “Kalter Hund” 🐶 It is based on a non-bake cake made from Leibniz butter biscuits and melted chocolate. This is “Oma (Granny) Hartmanns’” brand, and again we see the power of grandmotherly approval as a quality marker 👵🏻🍫
I had so much fun coming up with the #ZuckerRush (excuse the bilingual pun) coffee break treats - two more treats to go until the end of #DigitalPalates
We stay in the Japanese context with Polly Szatrowski and sustainability discourses in Japanese Instagram posts 🌱

Food is not only the key theme in the #DigitalPalates academic program, but also in the coffee breaks - every day we get a different treat! 😋 Today: Halloren-Kugeln (pralines) from Germany’s oldest chocolate factory, a popular treat in the former GDR (and now all of Germany) 🍫
At #DigitalPalates, Kelsi Matwick investigates how the Okinawan Blue Seal Ice Cream brand creates marketing narratives of nostalgia, heritage, and authenticity while retaining American origins. Very curious about Okinawan Salt Cookie 🍪 and Beni-Imo (sweet potato) 🥔 flavours 🍦

Day 3 of #DigitalPalates starts with a fun-boosted, boredom-free keynote by Nele Gerhardt on exgredients and addgredients in food blogs

Ready for day 3 of #DigitalPalates and the third keynote by Cornelia Gerhardt (Saarbrücken) on “The better choice” - exgredients 🚫 and addgredients ➕ in digital discourse

Good start of the morning, ready for the final day of #DigitalPalates 🌸
Everything #DigitalPalates sounds so interesting but this presentation really caught my eye, and yeah, a topic that speaks to a lot of critical issues nowadays!
So happy to be following along with all the presentations here via Bluesky!

It's day 3 of running #DigitalPalates and my motto is:
Off to having girl dinner after spending the afternoon at #DigitalPalates
Last but not least for day 2 of #DigitalPalates: Madge Mitchell on "Fermenting Femininity: Sourdough Semiotics and Tradwife Digital Homemaking" - sourdough is not just the backdrop in tradwife content on TikTok, it's performing ideological work
@annaborghi.bsky.social looks at TikTok food videos where the viewers either see or don't see the muscles of the male performers (ingeniously called YES muscle and NO muscle corpus) - videos "without muscles" received more negative comments

Last panel of the day - suddenly I find myself considering getting my mom a customized “Mamasaurus” Stanley Cup for Mother’s Day and thus, as Theresa Heyd (Heidelberg) points out in the first panel talk, embracing one of the cringiest culinary“Excess-ories” 🥤😬 #DigitalPalates
