Ever wonder how to get rid of a mattress? Or how to find resources for a neighbor in need? Call 311.
311 is contacted 100,000 times every day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. No call is too small.
So on the anniversary of 311 (3/11), I decided to answer some of those calls myself.
On Sunday, Philadelphia had equal numbers of homicides and traffic deaths. While the city has seen killings decline by nearly 80% since pandemic-era highs, progress on traffic deaths has been much slower.

“Driving is so hard-wired into American culture, life and institutions, that it’s hard to account for all the ways it is subsidized, preferenced or otherwise favored. But a law professor at the University of Iowa, attempted it anyway.”

When cars kill, it's just the cost of doing business. When e-bikes get popular, suddenly we need strict ordinances to stop "accidents".
When I entered grad school in 2013 we thought we had hit peak VMT (vehicle miles traveled) in the US 😭Inflation adjusted gas prices are still below what they have been for the past 50 years. We're up to 50M more miles driven each year since then. fred.stlouisfed.org/series/VMT
lol jawnt sticker suggests they should be extra ashamed of this anti urbanist behavior. Send em back to jerz
Took the quiz and came back with the bike that's already in my shed ❤️🚲
I had forgotten that most think I'm a lunatic for walking or biking my daughter a mile through the city to her preschool. Every once in a while I remember a particular teacher of mine did that in Baltimore and I thought he was nuts. Now I get it.
Oh dang, didn't expect 'em to run an opinion piece on bluesky.
Please read this. It'd make my grandma so proud knowing I'd been published in the Strib.
Today is Transit Worker Appreciation Day, and our loving cup of public transit passion runneth over! 🥰 🚉 💖

Cities spend millions on plastic flex posts that get flattened in a week. Meanwhile, the cheapest, most effective design tool is a boulder. They protect people, enforce behavior, and actually survive doing their job.
NYT buried the lede here. Gas prices are (with inflation) still lower than they were in the 2000s and 2010s. Last charts show the most. www.nytimes.com/2026/03/18/u...
“Parisian car traffic fell by more than half between 2002 and 2023, while cycle lanes expanded sixfold. Bikes now make more than twice as many journeys as cars.”

How much is gas now? No idea but carrying 3 kids with their scooters via bikes still gets you pretty far for almost free in Philly
Why do I have to pretend that I'm going to print something in order to save it as a PDF. Why do I have to engage in a little ruse.
It is time.

Happy Valentine's Day my love I've spent an hour hacking away at the ice to allow us access to your @ternbicycles.com for the first time in a month
Happy Valentine's Day sickos.
Know what was awesome today? My kid and I caught the 4 bus 3 times. Never waited more than 3 or 4 minutes for it. The snow was completely cleared at each stop along Broad Street. Was a delightful warm ride. Thanks @septaphilly.bsky.social !
Best form of winter transport
"Uber and Lyft are a way of saving parking by adding traffic" - @humantransit.bsky.social on why ridehail doesn't fundamentally change/fix the constraints of urban geometries
Love tree chippin at the park
Nine years ago today — January 9, 2017 — was the last time Hoboken had a traffic death.
Universal daylighting works. New Yorkers deserve the same protections as our neighbors across the Hudson River. Hundreds of New Yorkers die in preventable crashes every year. That has to end.
Happy new year! Same old tired wobbly bike racks next to 5 day old crowd control measures to use here in Philly!
Maybe #fifa2026 or #america250 celebrations means we can get better bike infra for everyone? A girl can dream.
Round Christmas ornament with yellow and black The War on Cars sticker on it.
Happy Christmas to all and to all a good bike!
Latest rumor about New Jersey's e-bike regulation bill, which would require licenses, insurance, and registration for all e-bikes, including Class I e-bikes, is that the state Senate has introduced an amendment with a carve-out for "bike-share companies with municipal contracts" 😬🙄🤮
