Click on hi-res and I can see the same commentators stand and location that I was using 40 years later. Gallipoli vet holding the sign is wearing the Military Cross so was an officer at the time he was awarded this medal for exemplary gallantry. Identity? collections.tepapa.govt.nz/object/556638

I've been coming to Auckland Anzac Day services at @aucklandmuseum.bsky.social for 20 years and was MC at the last 11am Civic Service five years ago in 2021 (Dawn Service only now). Brian Brake captured the service in 1978 when there were still Gallipoli veterans (ANZACs) on parade. #AnzacDay

Happy Heavenly 100th Birthday, Ma'am.
Specifically, and understandably after reading this record of the first day of the NZ Division at the Battle of the Flers-Courcelette, his conclusion:
"It was Hellish."

This Anzac Day to acknowledge the 110th anniversary year of the New Zealand Division on the Somme quoting from the diary of great grandfather Sgt Ted Dillon 3 NZ Fld Amb and a tribute to the memory of his daughter who at 99 died this year — one of the generation who lived in the shadow of the war.
For the early risers and remembrancers please join me at dawn for the live broadcast from the Auckland Anzac Day Dawn Service. www.maoriplus.co.nz/show/anzac-2...
In 2017 I stood at the grave of the 1905 All Blacks captain Dave Gallaher at @cwgc.bsky.social Nine Elms British Cemetery on the centenary of his death at Passchendaele on 4 Oct 1917. Almost a decade later I'm honoured to play a wee role in this new doco on @tvnz.bsky.social 1 at noon on Anzac Day.
I get how important the story of the cross is to the Tīnui community but this constant cry of “the first Anzac Service” does a disservice to the sorrow of every other community in the wake of Gallipoli. In any case, Titirangi bet Tīnui by seven hours! #AnzacDay #history
A fascinating story that sheds light on the dark story of the stripping of marae and cultural vandalism perpetrated against Māori, including here that one of our former national museum directors may have been responsible for the departure of Tāwhaki from Aotearoa. www.rnz.co.nz/life/culture...
Double or quit! #LuxonLuxOff
"The first Anzac Day service, held in 1916 at Tinui in Wairarapa... [and Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and every other city and town that mourned losses at Gallipoli.]"
Context and emphasis is everything in history. Lest We Forget.

Great to see my old friend standing up for Ngā Tapuwae New Zealand First World War Trails ngatapuwae.govt.nz on @NZQandA today www.tvnz.co.nz/tvseries/qa-... (56:55) While the website is being archived by the National Library what’s most useful on the ground overseas is the app. Lest We Forget.
Poppy Day 2026 an opportune time to update this History of Poppy Day! Christchurch RSA no longer produces poppies but Auckland has produced a new NZ-made poppy as the Royal New Zealand RSA imports Royal British Legion poppies. #PoppyDay #history www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial...
20 years ago! Congratulations Whakaata Māori for your commitment then and ever since. That’s the Spirit! www.nzonscreen.com/title/maori-...
Once again an honour to facilitate the remembrance of the service and sacrifice of New Zealanders throughout our history.

First New Zealand woman to be selected in the WNBA Draft.
A reminder that Anzac Day 1916 began with the people as a spontaneous desire by Gallipoli veterans and mourning communities to remember their dead. 110 years on government still catching-up with how local communities have been commemorating in practice for decades. www.mch.govt.nz/news/anzac-d...

110 years ago New Zealanders observed their first Anzac Day throughout the country. Within five years the Returned Soldiers' Association (RSA) had curated a public ritual of remembrance based on the military funerals at the front as seen in this 1921 footage. www.ngataonga.org.nz/search-use-c...

Reading my Saturday Oddity and instantly taken back 40 years! Dunedin's volleyball community was always tight and King's boys hung out with (and some dated) the Bayfield girls.
