Original 1925 jacket cover of The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby Here is a novel, glamorous, ironical, compassionate a marvellous fusion into unity of the curious incongruities of the life of the period which reveals a hero like no other one who could live at no other time and in no other place. But he will live as a character, we surmise, as long as the memory of any reader lasts. "There was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life. .. It was an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again?" It is the story of this Jay Gatsby who came so mysteriously to West Egg, of his sumptuous er-tertainments, and of his love for Daisy Buchanan a story that ranges from pure lyrical beauty to sheer brutal realism, and is infused with a sense of the strangeness of human circumstance in a heedless universe. It is a magical, living book, blended of irony, romance, and mysticism. CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS The GREAT GATSBY FITZGERALD
They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.
-FS Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, published 4/10/1925.

🖼️ ⬆️ Figure above from the Lancet paper: Deaths averted, years of life saved, and years of full health gained due to vaccination.
📌 As attempts to undermine confidence in vaccines continue, we must keep reminding people of the safety, effectiveness, and extraordinary value vaccination provides.
Half a decade later, at least 154 million lives have been saved globally.
That’s according to an analysis published in @thelancet.bsky.social last year ➡️ bit.ly/3DGoQlf

No time like the present to big up vaccination 💉✨
In 1974, the World Health Organization launched the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI). Why? High rates of vaccine-preventable disease.

Fact: Covid vaccines saved millions of lives
Also a fact: With equitable access to vaccines, millions more could have been saved
Battling misinformation and disinformation
naccurate information about diseases, treatments and vaccines undermines trust in science and public health. It threatens global health by distorting public perception and eroding confidence in evidence-based policies. During emergencies and conflicts, misinformation exacerbates health crises by fostering confusion and fear and diverting resources from a coordinated response. This erosion of public trust is leaving populations vulnerable to preventable diseases and fueling inequities.
WHO continues to fight against misinformation and disinformation—a great challenge to global health. Governments, health agencies, and partners need to safeguard public trust by responding to misinformation and disinformation directly and effectively.

On Thursday the 2024 issue of @theneweuropean.bsky.social comes out and they have given me the platform to explain why Gisèle Pelicot is my hero and how she radically changed the conversation about shame and sexual assault
It is my proudest writing.
