It’s been looong but feels satisfying to see this finally out.

Dear all, I'm happy to present you a side project done with @diegoharta.bsky.social @phylogenetrips.bsky.social & Lucas Baudouin regarding the publication landscape in Biology: wheretopublish.github.io 1/4
If you are a scientist, working on biology, wondering where to submit your manuscript given the current issues with the academic publishing system, check out wheretopublish.github.io!
We did this thinking change is possible. Let’s make it happen!

The result: panmixia and high effective population size, helping explain how amphioxus maintain extreme genomic diversity alongside striking phenotypic stability.
6/7
This near-panmictic pattern is best explained by long-distance larval dispersal via ocean currents. Together with a wide ecological range, this dispersal leads to a very large effective population size, ultimately resulting in extraordinary heterozygosity of ~3%.
5/7
Using population genomic and phylogenetic analyses, together with comparisons to simulations, we show that despite low adult mobility and local settlement, European amphioxus populations exhibit a weak population structure that place them close to panmixia.
4/7
We used high-coverage whole-genome data from multiple individuals sampled at two distant locations (Atlantic & Mediterranean) to accurately quantify genomic diversity and investigate its evolutionary causes.
3/7
Amphioxus are fascinating chordates: despite an extremely simple and conserved phenotype—even between deeply diverged species—they harbor some of the highest levels of genomic diversity ever reported in metazoans. How can such phenotypic stability coexist with extreme genomic diversity?

What is it like to have one of the highest genomic diversities among metazoans?

Very proud to share our perspective on "The Genomic Kaleidoscope" doi.org/10.1093/gbe/... out @genomebiolevol.bsky.social
Precious collaboration w/ colleagues across the world, led alongside the amazing @mbrasovives.bsky.social and the one&only @jrotwitguez.bsky.social
Check out his great thread!
👏 It really shows how powerful meetings can be for sparking ideas and collaborations —and when those turn into joint efforts like this, even greater! Thank you all for this fun adventure!

Thank you, Marc! 🙃
GBE | The Genomic Kaleidoscope: On the Hidden Dimensions of Within-Species Genomic Diversity
Brasó-Vives et al. publish a new Perspective in GBE, highlighting underexplored dimensions of genomic variation that contribute to phenotypic diversity beyond the DNA sequence, contributing to our understanding of genome evolution.
