Happy April Fools’ to the teammate who always says:
‘I’ll just do the audit manually, it’ll be quicker.’
We admire the confidence 😇
We’ll stick to tools that save time and sanity, because we all know where manual audits lead… #Genome

GBE | Genome Assemblies of the Daisy Gorteria diffusa Elucidate the Molecular-Genomic Basis of Pollination by Sexual Deception The image depicts morphotypes (subspecies) and intraspecific hybrids of Gorteria diffusa L., a South African daisy that is pollinated by sexual deception of male bombyliid flies. Between the inflorescences is a graphic representation of the new reference genome assembly of the G. diffusa ‘Springbok’ morphotype (upper left corner), which, together with genomic analysis of hybrid zones, enabled the discovery of structural genomic changes underlying the evolution of plant sexual deception.
Kellenberger @joanameier.bsky.social @beverleycubg.bsky.social et al. studied sexual deception in South African daisy, identifying inverted genomic segments that may maintain the distinct identity of some floral forms in secondary contact zones.

GBE | A Deep Dive into the Globin Superfamily of Sharks, Skates, and Rays: Contrasting Patterns of Gene Loss and Retention Relative to Bony Vertebrates Walt et al. leveraged genomic and transcriptomic datasets to investigate the evolutionary history of the globin gene superfamily in cartilaginous fishes. The illustration depicts representatives from the three major lineages of cartilaginous fishes: the whale shark (top), the giant manta ray (right), and the elephant fish (left). The three cartilaginous fishes are surrounding an illustration of the tertiary structure of a hemoglobin subunit. The illustration was prepared by Amber E. McDonald.
Walt et al. leverage newly available cartilaginous fish genomes to investigate globin gene family evolution, revealing both similar and contrasting patterns of globin gene evolution between cartilaginous and bony vertebrates.

GBE | Allelic Variation at tRNA Genes in Three Nematode Species Indicates Mutation Load Despite Strong Purifying Selection Transfer RNAs (tRNAs) are ancient, essential molecules with a consistent ‘cloverleaf’ structure (gray points here), but the genes that encode them vary substantially within populations of nematodes (like the C. elegans worm pictured here). This variation, represented by the pie charts here, has been governed by mutation and natural selection and likely impacts tRNA function.
@averydb.bsky.social @annalisepaaby.bsky.social et al. show that cytosolic transfer RNAs genes in three Caenorhabditis nematodes carry signatures of high rates of historical transcription-associated mutagenesis and of purifying selection.
