Why does music exist, and why does it move us so deeply? Beyond being a universal source of emotion, music reveals something fundamental about how the brain works: we are constantly predicting. Check this @nature.com review www.nature.com/articles/s41... @manlius.bsky.social @gemmadlc.bsky.social

Figure showing number of competitive grants mentioning women from 2015-2025. The number was rising until recently, with a precipitous drop in the last year.

At the end of 2024, the National Academies put out a report concluding the NIH has woefully underfunded womenโ€™s health research, and they suggested $15 B should be invested over the next 5 years.

Hereโ€™s whatโ€™s happened instead. Hard to study womenโ€™s health if you canโ€™t say โ€œwomen.โ€

Loved being drawn into this collaboration by @neuroweiler.bsky.social and learning about birds and their magnetic senses.

Here's my hot take for a better method of scientific publishing.

Before you report anything, the raw data must be uploaded online. What you publish is actually code embedded in the Results section, which calls an analysis of the raw data and returns the result. No more incorrect stats!

But wait...

Excited to share our latest in @currentbiology.bsky.social (they who publish the coolest papers!)

Memories are encoded by sparse neuronal ensembles (engrams). But most evidence comes from "simple" associative learning tasks. What about more integrative memories like spatial navigation?

Don't be shy to take on a little two-week side project. These five months will be the most precious three years of your academic journey.

These images show live embryos of animals (jellyfish, crustacean, worm, sea urchin, sea squirt, beetle) and one of animals closest single-celled relatives. They were captured taking advantage of fluorescent proteins localised on the outer membrane of cells, allowing us to observe cell outlines. 1/9

What a nice story about this learning process and this beautiful yet unconventional human-octupus interaction!

I didnโ€™t expect a short video about an octopus to stay with me this long.

At first, it looks like a simple, almost playful interaction. But the more you watch, the more something deeper emerges: a learning process unfolding between two completely different forms of intelligence.

"Although animals in natural environments accumulate a wide range of experiences that allow them to calibrate threat assessment, most behavioral studies of anxiety rely on laboratory animals housed in static, impoverished conditions."
