A great program to give you some directive action & some agency & some hope.

Have you served on an NIH study section (or thought about serving)? Did you know that that the small perk of being able to submit your own applications after the deadline has largely been revoked? grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

the article gives me hope that we (and the American people) will win this fight
a GOP-affiliated polling firm found that more than 90% of Americans think it’s important for the US to be the global leader in biomedical research & for the govt to fund it. 62% of Americans we need more $$$, not less
WHY?!
1/2 This memo identifies absolutely no source of legal authority for paying TSA. It does not point to an appropriation that is available for this purpose, nor does it point to any legal authority to transfer some other appropriation to TSA. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...
NIH went from 756 funding announcements (NOFO) in 2024 to 120 in 2025 to just 14 so far this year. Reports this collapse due to number of policy changes including requiring every NOFO be approved by political appointees and now also by the Office of Management and Budget. The full impact is vast
The attack on science research by the Trump Regime is going to have reverberations that will echo long into the future. China was already pulling ahead in many areas of science and technology, but this self-inflicted injury to American scientific research will accelerate that trend.
Aww thanks
Loved hearing from @meganranney.bsky.social this morning on an ISMPP/CSE webinar on restoring trust in science. "Facts don't speak for themselves"; we need to use stories (which doesn't mean telling tall tales). I'm inspired to keep learning about #storytelling in science. #scicomm
A very small bright spot for kids & families!
I am glad.
But I also worry that this will confuse the public even more, until this whole mess is cleared up. (Full disclosure; its implications confused some lawyers, docs, and public health professionals at first) 🧪🩺🛟

Oh I didn’t write this! I’m a scientist, physician, and dean @yalesph.bsky.social ! Just sharing the important work of Elizabeth Ginexi 🙏
A total collapse.
The National Institutes of Health went from 756 funding announcements published to 14 in two years.
One example of the effects: emerging threats will become harder to address quickly. Response to future health emergencies (like Covid) will be slower and less coordinated.
"This is not a temporary slowdown. It is a structural collapse."
This is BLEAK.
And illustrates why we didn’t celebrate the funding “wins”.
A change in NIH policy change requires poltical review for the announcement of finding notifications, resulting in greater political control over research and reducing the ability for biomedical research to respond to emerging and understudied problems.
Absolutely astonishing. I don't think many people realize the extent to which the scientific enterprise in America has collapsed over the past 14 months.
As someone who covered science funding for the first half of his career, it's almost unfathomable this could happen.
To people who don't believe in funding the NIH and research in general: I guarantee you that you have benefited from past investment in science
This is horrifying and the impact it will have on health and science in this country cannot be understated.
“Dr. Pilloud said that she felt like she had to present ideas that were not scientifically sound — such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s new, and widely disputed, guidance about vaccines” I realize I am fortunate, but I genuinely cannot imagine doing this.
On top of the slowdown in grantmaking I wrote about last week - this is another deeply worrisome trend for scientists, physicians, patients, families, and basically anyone who wants new treatments and new tools to promote health. 🆘🧪🥼

"The $7.3 billion National Cancer Institute (NCI), NIH’s largest institute, is also feeling the effects. At a recent public meeting, Deputy Director Doug Lowy noted the NOFO approval process now requires 16 steps. He joked that it’s now more complex than a 1929 Rube Goldberg design for a can opener"
FCC Chair Brendan Carr threatens broadcast licenses over Iran War coverage
The Federal Parent Locator Service contains sensitive details about individual children, and it’s meant for finding people who owe child support.
Granting access to DHS would violate a federal law that explicitly limits its use, officials said.

This should be the biggest weather and climate news on your radar today.

Following @joshuasweitz.bsky.social post and discussions with him and the Vox story, I have estimated R01 success rates for each NIH institute and center with enough awards for this to be meaningful.
