A guide to the symbology used in the #2034sight Plan. Metra lines would be renamed to a letter-based system, with single letters corresponding to routes and stopping patterns. Additionally, similar to the New York City Subway, different shapes (diamonds and circles) would be used to denote express services vs. local services. Services that only operate during the peak are colored gray regardless of line. As the improvements of the 2034sight Plan are rolled out and as CrossTowner regional rail service is implemented, local routes would generally be consolidated into consistent "X#" lines, resulting in suburban Metra service using diamonds and single letters universally. Letters for each line are generally assigned based on downtown terminus, with A-F trains using Ogilvie; G-P trains using Union Station; Q-T trains using LaSalle Street Station, and U-Z trains using Millennium Station. Several letters are not used to avoid confusion with numbers (I and O); "L" is not used to avoid confusion with the CTA (and to reserve L# naming for a future CTA renaming scheme); and "X#" routes are used exclusively to denote CrossTowner routes. While this naming scheme is forward-compatible with bringing South Shore Line trains into the system, the system will still work fine if NICTD remains totally separate.
