Did you know: The chainsaw in DOOM was modelled off of Tom Hall’s Eager Beaver chainsaw. It leaked oil, and so was kept in a bowl in the id offices. Tom still has it!💛

Last week, a 20 year-old man threw a molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's mansion; two days later, people fired a gun at it. Earlier that week, someone fired gunshots into an city councilman's house who approved a data center.
Why the AI backlash has turned violent:
If you free yourself from concepts like "shipping," "making money," and "gameplay," you can just make fun little guys
making video games
imagined: make fun little guys
actual: invoicing, doing contracts, writing taxes, having planning meetings, doing UI
fell down a rabbit hole, apparently the most thorough guides for Baldur's Gate 1&2 are written by a woman who has been thoroughly blogging all her video game opinions since the 1980s.
she gave Baldur's Gate 3 a 2.1/10 rating and scathingly calls it a reddit RPG

Any time white people talk about Gen Z or Gen Alpha slang, it does double psychic damage if you're a Black game developer because you know all of the AAVE terms and all of the videogame related terms.
it's AAVE! it's AAVE! It's not the youths it's BLACK PEOPLE
Money has been dried up in games for long enough now that there are Obviously Good Ideas that can't find money, and so we're starting to see folks with modest amounts of cash offering it for Ideas from people they know very well, and the cycle begins anew.
even our fiction focuses on bad news what about a crew of space miners who go to a planet and there are no hostile aliens there also the survival conditions are coincidentally actually rather convenient for humans and everything goes just fine as planned sounds nice right
Just gonna reach out again to see if anyone needs an extra hand for Unreal support/Netcode/lobby/character action and controls/fighting games.
My cost of living is pretty low and so my rates are reasonable.
One thing I find interesting is that despite seemingly the ENTIRE INDUSTRY trying to kill VR and make it seem as uncool as possible... VRChat has grown almost every month for almost eight years now and is among the top 25 most played things on Steam.
Niche? Perhaps, but a big & hungry one.
It's even worse with AI, where people confidentially claim that models that require 10 $50K super computers will be running on their iPhone in a year or two 😭
Realizing there's a substantive number of people who think the Steam Frame is going to be able to run PCVR games natively at 'normal' settings. Has baseline hardware literacy, like just what various classes of devices are capable relative to each other, gotten this bad?
I wonder how many chains a player will pull off in a single turn 🤔 #ScreenshotSaturday #indiedev #gamedev
The converse is being able to do this and trying to communicate it to people who can't can be frustrating. That's another big part of being a good design director, getting everyone on board with your vision
Yes, that is what is should be like.

Sometimes I think about how Konami took the original Game Boy, a machine designed to run Alleyway and Mario Land, and made it play a feature complete, expanded version of Tokimeki Memorial that still looked recognizably beautiful with only four colors, and I think it's about time you did, too.

A Little Perspective is out now! Switch between isometric perspectives to create geometry-defying pathways!

A cover scan with an illustration of a red classic western dragon seen from the cockpit of a fighter jet with lit instrument panels
One of my favourite Dragon magazine covers - March 1989's. Always makes me think of Shadowrun's Awakening and what it would have been like for the pilots encountering dragons in the sky for the first time.
Every action rogue like is just a remake of r-type. Change my mind. :-)
Like the top selling game of all time (at least was) an indie game from the late 2000s-early 2010s Tigsource scene...
Anyone that says this is also almost always talking about top 0.001% indie titles that have outsold most AAA games and often have more cultural impact than anything that's not like, GTA, COD, Mario or Madden
Conference season has been a blur, but one of the things I'm most excited about is the work @enduringgames.bsky.social showed at GDC -- Slang compiling for consoles!

I think a lot of 80s and early 90s games have guys that look like this because they're all based on Arnold Schwarzenegger
