Aella is also a well-known figure in SV circles promoting neoliberal hellish politics, the thin line between "troll" and "person who does actions" is very blurry when someone has connections & power to pull through and influence people.

These people are reposting stuff like that unironically (annie is the girl with the "property rights are human rights"), I wouldn't consider them "trolls".
I'm not sure what the solution is for the time being (besides breaking our chains etc), but given that a lot of indie publishers also tend to be funded or branches of much larger corporations, it begs the question of how "indie" the scene currently is. Control can take many forms.
And when as an indie dev you're backed to the wall cause you're overworking with a full-time job as well as your project, it very easily becomes a no-brainer as to what you choose, thus surrendering agency for capital. I feel it is a real problem in the indie scene these days.
I'm not gonna talk about the classic "you're not getting funded because this game doesn't currently fit the market" because that's just how capitalism works (cough), there are many occasions where the publisher essentially says "we like it, add x/remove y and you're signed"
I've talked with indie developers in various conferences and the picture I get so far (as someone also vested in the indie scene) is that most publishers tend to push creative changes depending on "what the market is asking for" right now. This can take many forms.
I think it's good if we generally dive deeper into how "indie" publishers also work, most "indie" publishers proclaim a "no meddling" approach but the reality is somewhat different.

Again, suggesting that slides into authoritarianism are not caused by capitalism's crisis but something else more vague like "evil" is ahistorical and apolitical nonsense.
Suggesting that this is the media sphere's fault and not like, capitalism crashing and resorting to authoritarianism (as it has done in the past) is suggesting that your burn is not caused by the fire but by the fact that someone told you you got burned.

The point is precisely that they have "infinite money" and could have easily thrown it in the product and hired a bunch of people and tried to make Silksong come out faster & make it "better", yet they chose not to
I guess we will see by the results tho
Yeah, but still, not sure about their expenses and such, but the salaries of 3 people for 7 years is not as much as the salary of 15-20 people for 2-3 years (which is now considered a mid-sized indie studio)
I'm talking mostly about absurd upscaling happening in indie spaces
Didn't see the pinned comment! Regarding the 2nd point I honestly feel kinda dumb, I didn't 2nd-monitor it I had 100% attention span + 2 cigarettes for the concentration effort but it seems it wasn't enough for my zoomer brain
Tim Allen's Grunt every time an error pops up
While in 2023 (and subsequently 2024), as one friend put it, it was the year of all-talk & no business. You were attending meetings but it was very obvious that everyone was there just to keep appearances.
I don't really have a lot of data to back it up, but as an avid Gamescom attender (on the business side), the stark contrast between 2022 and 2023 was insane. In 2022, most publishers were willing to churn out big money if your game had a few perquisites, even in the premium-title section
Regarding the 2nd point, it was very obvious post-pandemic that a lot of the investors that flew in would want to cash out ASAP by any means necessary
Just watched this, amazing video. I do have to say though that you overlooked a few things, mainly
-Valve's role into this
-The covid pandemic which gave people more free time to play games, and thus cause another gold rush
I think it shows that the old "adage" of "just throw some money and it will work" is not necessarily true when it comes to games, or art for that matter.
It is surely vital to not starve and have a comfortable life, but it doesn't "solve" the problem of creating a cool game.

season 4 was very stale, they're getting too on the nose with a few things
If bsky is to become anything other than a "haha fuck you twitter", it needs to overcome that phase very soon. VERY soon.
Let's actually post stuff here that people care about without resorting to the whole cultural warfare for once.
2 cents out here.
