That design is incredible. Just the patterning itself, and then to actually DO it!

That looks a lot like work, but rather fascinating. We were just discussing keeping birds and squirrels off certain plants.
And remember what that number is
It’s important to feed your passions :)
Front view of the trellis tunnel at the bottom of the hill, made from cattle panels
Looking uphill/up terracing through the trellis tunnel
Looking downhill through trellis tunnel
Payday meant we could get the 5 cattle panels to make my hobbit hole trellis tunnel. I love it and I’m looking forward to the grapes, kiwi, pole beans, squash and whatever else we vine up there! #growyourfood #gardening #homestead #sustainable #diy #bogwitch
Piecing those horizontal points must be a labor. I zoomed in to see the fabrics and it’s really great I close and far away. Good work and a cheery set of colors
Topical!
Baby French angora rabbits buried in there. There’s 8 of them! 4 light, 4 dark
You can see the color difference between them. I have been able to get a quick count but she’s quite defensive of them so I’m trying to be patient.
First time mamma rabbit who is raggety looking after pulling it the majority of her hair to make the nest.
We have French angora kits! She’s a first time mom, she went nuts pulling hair for a nest. So excited. I bought her already bred to add a separate set of genetics to my single buck I got at the same time #angorarabbit #spinning #bogwitch #homesteading #rabbitsofbluesky #frenchangora #witchsky
I put roots in this year and finally saw a shoot. It was so hard to let it go since they say not to pick them the first year. But I waaants it!
Ah. The adventures of buying things and then realizing you didn’t inspect it as you should. But also, How accomplished you most feel after digging in and getting it working! Now you know that loom so much more intimately than if it needed nothing.
Oh yes, really. They can handle snow on them.
You can freeze it also. I like freezing it all fluffy then grabbing a handful and crumbling it over eggs or on pizza or pasta sauce or whatever.
Oh you don’t have to worry about lettuce and a cold front. They love it
I’ve been really excited about pickling them and cooking them in recent years. I had no real idea you could cook them!
You’re doing IT. And that’s what counts. Now start something else :)
We’ve been concentrating on perennial foods w/the idea of making a self renewing #foodforest. We have a #wetland adjacent to us we’re planting natives in: elderberry, maypop, chokeberry. Plus apple, pomegranate, blackberries, raspberry, asparagus, rhubarb, sunchoke, gooseberries, kiwi, blueberry
Sunset from the top of the hill while we work into dusk making terraces
Sun’s getting real low, dumping chips into the new section while I smooth dirt on top of chips in terrace below
Done for the night, it’s cool to see the log to the right be covered, it seemed like a fantasy that it would actually work!
Still a little concerned about the slope of that bottom hill section, but we’ll plant a bunch of vines and things in it to secure the dirt and hope for the best. Made a sort of mound of dirt at the highest point the tractor could reach to make a mini wall to discourage erosion while the dirt compacts and settles over the logs and chips. Maybe plant maypops there?
This project has been so slow, dangerous, and sometimes demoralizing, but it’s finally coming together and I’m over the moon excited to actually start planting in it!
Terracing project where this last bit got dug out and was problematic for our long term aesthetic goals, but the first log “wall” put in at the top
Two log walls making two terraces. Then solved the too high wall problem by making a log supported slant hugelkultur bed. Not sure what to put there yet, maybe berry bushes and some viney veg?
The slant being filled in with wood chips before being topped with dirt to plant in
Weird POV, but this is the first terrace above the slant wall. The section closest to camera I planted with ginger alternating with leeks, radicchio adding the edge closest to camera, a yellow squash to go over the log and trail down the slant wall, and a pepper plant near the bare root cold hardy pomegranate that’s planted by the upright stick on the right side. Beyond is a new section ready to have the dirt smoothed and planted. Onions are the plan there. Beyond that, we are still filling with chips.
#hugelkultur terracing project is going well! In the last picture you can even see some planting happened! See the alt text for more details. I think this is really going to help with erosion going into the pond #homesteading #bogwitch #gardening #earthmoving #tractorlady
Pond and woods covered in surprise snow
It was 90 degrees yesterday. #climatechange #bogwitch #homesteading I hope the plants all make it.
Screenshot of Google search about Penzeys spices
So I have a friend visiting and they were telling me, because I #cookyourfood 🌱 and #garden for food about this company under siege #penzey spices because of their liberal politics. So go buy #spices and #votewithyourmoney
Bucket load of little branches and some pre rotted logs from the brush pile pulled behind the tractor. The orange is a grading scraper. Yellow is a tree saver strap. Raised beds in the background.
Smallish branches with bark chewed off in a brush pile
Cool tree with maybe an animal den at the roots in the woods.
Raided the brush pile for my #hugelkultur plan to fill the raised beds. Also found some interesting stuff. Any #naturalist on my feed? What would eat the bark off dead branches? It seems fresh. And also, I think something lives there, how cute is their house? Look at that cool stump! #nature #woods
It’s more that with the oil not flowing through the strait of Hormuz, the world will need other sources. Then the US oil companies that have the Venezuelan oil can sell it to the world.
Clump of daffodils with stone edging with three yellow blooms
Hello spring! We had a nice day yesterday in the mid 60’s and I guess that was enough for joy to happen! Pardon my bulbs that need thinning, they came with the house and I just found them. Half of them were under a rock! #springflowers #daffodils #bogwitch #gardening
Pile of logs from chip drop
If you need firewood, chip drop is your service! They have to cure, but wow! I had only gotten chips from them before, but these will be the base of my terracing/retaining walls. #terracing #walls #firewood #homesteading
Sorting the recycling! #parrotsofbluesky #cockatoo #recycling
Holy horsepower! Look at the size of the root I just snapped nearly before I realized I was caught! #earthmovingnewbie #kubota #terracing
Front end of the Kubota tractor and the beginning of the hill being terraced. Piles of dirt in a line.
Terracing the hill has begun today in earnest! #kubota #tractorlady #bogwitch #foodforest
Espalier apple tree in a cart.
I finally got my birthday present! An espalier apple tree with three different apple varieties in it. So excited to have this to play with. #espalier #homestead #bogwitch #gardening
A big part of attracting wildlife is having what they need to be successful. Housing, food, safety, etc. Maslow hierarchy of needs stuff. Figure out what owls are in the area, what they nestin & eat; see if you can provide that. Maybe talk to a wildlife rehab place about releasing near you.
