💬 “If you have the mirror image of your key or you make a very small change to the key or to the keyhole, suddenly the door might open or close,” says Thomas Voets “These studies open the door to personalized pain medicine, allowing doctors to tailor treatments based on a patient’s TRPM3 ‘keyhole’”.

🤸‍♂️ Researchers from the Voets Lab, have identified a tiny binding site, a molecular ’keyhole’, in the TRPM3 ion channel, a crucial sensor in pain signaling. TRPM3 is also linked to rare neurodevelopmental disorders and epilepsy.

💬 “Most studies suggest microglia clean up amyloid plaques. What we discovered is that they’re actually part of the problem—they generate plaques,” says Joost Schymkowitz.

🤸‍♂️ Researchers from the @vib-switch-lab.bsky.social , co-led by Frederic Rousseau & Joost Schymkowitz, show that microglia can actively promote plaque formation in Alzheimer’s disease—challenging the long-standing view that these cells only defend the brain by clearing plaques.

Researchers from the De Strooper Lab just revealed how #lecanemab ’s Fc fragment is key to activating microglia to clear toxic amyloid plaques. It’s the first direct mechanistic evidence for this class of Alzheimer’s therapies, published in Nature Neuroscience.
