The older I get, the more I admire how carefully Conan Doyle structured a Holmes story nothing wasted, everything purposeful.

It’s a high bar to aim for.

A still from the show Elementary. Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) in a sleeveless white top with round black buttons, and Johnny Lee Miller as Sherlock in a dark suit and light grey shirt buttoned-up to the neck.

Just watched my 154th and final episode of Elementary. Despite its flaws - some dull/daft cases (hazard of all procedurals), some dropped story threads and disappearing characters, Liu and Miller were always great, and great together. Probably my favourite version of the Holmes/Watson partnership.

Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty fight to the death in the Mendips.

Now watching: ‘The Final Problem’, dir. George Ridgwell, 1923, with Eille Norwood as Sherlock Holmes. It relocates the fatal battle with Moriarty from Switzerland to... Cheddar Gorge.

"Proposed Start Date: Jully 1887: 7th 9r 8th (skottowe, Morley) Brend and Harrison give no specific days.
September 1887: 7th or 17th (Bell) [?]
April 1888: 16th (Zeisler)
July 1888: 18th (Folsom)
September 1888: 8th or 15th or 18th or 25th or 17th (Christ, Baring-Gould, Dakin, Tracy, Metcaffe)

The Chronological - Biorythmic Conclusions:
1. with apologies to Messrs. Brend, Morley, Harrison, Skottowe, and Bell, the year of the case must be accepted as being 1888. The sheer weight of internal evidence leads to no other conclusion, for Watson continually and consistently presents dates which fit no matter which base is used for the computation:
a) Referring to 1878- "upon the 3rd pf December. 1878 - nearly ten years ago."
b) "about six years ago - to be exact, upon the 4th of May, 1882."
c) Even Mary's "six" pearls are consistent with the overall insistence of a passage of six years. whether Mary received seven pearls is immaterial, for Watson has "six" on his mind. the fact that he probably did not count the pearls correctly can be inferred from his use of the collective 'have-dozen" when referring to the number of pieces of paper submitted to Holmes for handwringing analysis. This usage certainly implies about six. alternative explanations ( as simple subtraction error due to not remembering the rule for inclusive numbers or the proposed sale of one of the pearls by Mary over the years) are not necessary when the entire weight of internal evidence cries out for 1888.
e) there is painstaking consistency among all the dates which must be accepted at face value. Watson has no reason to conceal or equivocate on matters chronological. After all, his marriage to Mary was Public record at the time. Even the most superficial" ...

Biorhythmic Holmes is thicker then I thought it would be... don't know why I thought this would be thinner. Going to be a lot to work through.😶 It's hiding a pack underneath that zine like cover.

(btw, I still posit Watson's marriage(s?), if they existed, were lavender ones for public image sake)

Here's a funny one - Doyle advocating tea as a doctor with a slightly different spelling in 1885/6:

A CONNOR DOYLE Esq. M.D. C.M., Southsea: "The Royal Bengal Tea appears to me to possess less tannin and to be more suited to the use of dyspeptic patients than any of which I have experience".

Enjoying ‘Young Sherlock’ yet can’t help but feel a ‘Young Moriarty’ spin-off would be even better.

Inspired by @comicsinthega.bsky.social, tonight I’ll be watching some of Jeremy Brett’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. The definitive Holmes, for me. First up will be “The Devil’s Foot”, a favorite of mine. The limited special effects helped make Holmes’ withdrawal/fever dream even more surreal.
