A period image of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman, famous for his Civil War ending "March to the Sea" overlaid with the meemish text "Happy Confederate History Month? Clearly I didn't burn enough shit." You sea, neo-confederates, slaver apologists, and the racist governments of the former southern Confederacy have declared that April as #confederateheritagemonth to commemorate the birthdays of losers Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and all the other traitors who betrayed the United States of America to form their own failed country dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of chattel slavery. At least, that was the claim. In actuality it was ecause they were all butthurt over the establishment of Dr. Martin Luther King day as a national holiday and couldn't stand having a black man or any black person so commemorated.

April 9th 1865 was the date that Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, marking the functional end of the Confederacy after only four years of malignant existence. Your heritage is slavery, mine is burning your fucking house down.

A year or 2 ago a mutual, encouraging me in my spendthrift ways, persuaded me to buy this actual #19thc flirtation card from Abebooks. Little did I know that these minute paper scraps (aids to flirtation & discretion) would make a comeback. So says the Guardian:

From The Illustrated American, December 8, 1894. Inside one diamond illustration, two men are photographed with arms linked, one facing forward and one from behind. The man wears a high-buttoned light-colored jacket with a flower on the lapel, and a straw hat with a wide ribbon. In the second illustrated diamond, the reverse image is shown. The man with his back turned previously is now shown from the front with a less dandy hat and no flower but a similar suit. The other man's back is shown. The text reads in full: ANOTHER FEAT IN AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHY.

The accompanying illustration will be of interest to those of our readers who are amateur photographers.

The novelty consists, as is seen, in photographing a subject from the front and then from behind, and then in mounting the two photographs on reverse sides of the same card. In this way one can see the same person in an "all around" way.

Finally had a chance to visit Sherard Osborn's grave. He's in a pretty prestigious spot at Highgate. Earlier this week I saw this new to me photo of him, aged 41. [The National Archives] He died at only age 54. He was so much like Fitzjames (Sophia Cracroft agrees with me)! #NavalHistory #19thC

Any books articles podcast eps etc you know that tells Luddite history in a new, positive light, optionally relating it to current tech-labour situation?

I'm particularly interested in stuff by academic historians as other stuff I'm able to find with more ease.

When I purchased my current residence, I had dreams of having get togethers, picnics, dinner parties, and simple social hangings about. Of course, this was exactly at the beginning of Covid and all those plans were dashed. Still, very nice to think of what might have been.

We are starting the season of "lasts." Reading Pride & Prejudice. Teach the first half of it tomorrow (World of #JaneAusten Freshman Seminar). This will be the last time I teach that novel at #Emory. Have loved teaching it. Look forward to seeing what the students do w it. #18thc #19thc

My talk covered the typical diet of a working class family depending upon income and cooking facilities, the recipe books of the era, dining out, street food and the introduction of the new convenience foods, finishing with a look at the nutritional load of a typical Victorian diet.
