5 Apr 1942 // Minesweeper HMS Abingdon was severely damaged by Axis air attacks while awaiting repairs to earlier war damage at Kalkara Creek dock, Malta. She was beached in Bighi Bay and subsequently abandoned as a total loss. Her wreck was broken up in 1950. #RoyalNavy #WW2 #NavalHistory

Yamamoto Isoroku's reputation has been somewhat sanitized over the years, and at times he's wrongly cast as a peace figure within the #IJN.

It's not unfair to say that he hesitantly sent the Navy to war, having largely been dragged there by the #IJA. He deserved a better end. #NavalHistory #PHG

4 Apr 1942 // Oiler RFA Plumleaf was bombed and sunk at Parlatario Wharf, Grand Harbour, Malta. She had already been damaged in an air raid on 26 March, and after sinking on 4 April she was declared a total loss. The wreck was scrapped in 1947. #RoyalFleetAuxiliary #RoyalNavy #WW2 #NavalHistory

4 Apr 1798 // 32-gun frigate HMS Pallas was driven onto rocks in Cawsand Bay, Cornwall, when her anchor cables parted in a storm. All but one of those on board were safely brought ashore, but the ship could not be refloated and was eventually broken up where she lay. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

4 Apr 1781 // Brig sloop HMS St Fermin, sailing from Gibraltar to Menorca with dispatches, was captured off Malaga by two Spanish xebecs after a lengthy chase. The British had captured St Fermin from the Spanish in 1780, and she was now returned to Spanish Navy service. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

On this date in 1933, the US Navy airship Akron crashed into the Atlantic Ocean in a storm off the coast of New Jersey.
73 men died in the crash, including Admiral William Moffett, the chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics.
There were only three survivors.
