4 Apr 1942 // Oiler RFA Plumleaf was bombed and sunk at Parlatario Wharf, Grand Harbour, Malta. She had already been damaged in an air raid on 26 March, and after sinking on 4 April she was declared a total loss. The wreck was scrapped in 1947. #RoyalFleetAuxiliary #RoyalNavy #WW2 #NavalHistory

29 Nov 1939 // Oiler RFA Birchol ran aground at Rubha Mealabhaig, south-eastern South Uist, because of a navigational error by her Master. There was no loss of life. She could not be salvaged and was abandoned after stores and equipment were removed. #RoyalFleetAuxiliary #WW2 #NavalHistory

20 Nov 1941 // Oiler RFA War Mehtar, bound from Methil to Harwich with a coastal convoy, was torpedoed by German E-boat S.104 off Great Yarmouth. She initially remained afloat although badly damaged, but later sank while under tow. No lives were lost. #RoyalFleetAuxiliary #WW2 #NavalHistory

17 Nov 1962 // Oiler RFA Green Ranger, under tow from Plymouth to Cardiff for refit, grounded on Hartland Point after the tow had to be slipped in a storm. The seven men on board were all taken off by breeches buoy. The ship later broke up and was sold for scrap. #RoyalFleetAuxiliary #NavalHistory

22 Oct 1941 // Oiler RFA Darkdale was torpedoed by U.68 in James Bay, St Helena. Hit at 1:42am, she burned until 5:30am when she exploded and sank. 41 men died. The wreck continued to leak oil until a cleaning operation which lasted from 2012 to 2015. #RoyalFleetAuxiliary #WW2 #NavalHistory

22 Sept 1942 // Oil tanker RFA Gray Ranger, in ballast with convoy QP14 from Russia to Scotland, was torpedoed and sunk west of Jan Mayen Island by U.435. Six of her crew were killed and 32 survivors were evacuated before the ship was scuttled with gunfire. #RoyalFleetAuxiliary #WW2 #NavalHistory

19 July 1940 // Moored at Dover, oiler RFA War Sepoy was hit by a bomb in the engine room during an air raid and was assessed as beyond economical repair. Further damaged by another air raid on 25 July, she was sunk off the harbour entrance as a blockship. #RoyalFleetAuxiliary #WW2 #NavalHistory
