Yesterday I found myself south of the river in London or, as She Who Must Be Obeyed says, abroad. I went slightly overboard on the historical fiction purchases and discovered a bee resting in the library on my return. A bee of good taste! 📚 🐝 📚 Happy Easter! 🐣 #histbookchat
@navalairhistory.com enjoyed the book. History I was vaguely aware of but not the details. It all adds to the picture. #histbookchat
Just started this one last night before bed. Looks interesting!!
"Empire and Jihad: The Anglo-Arab Wars of 1870-1920” by Neil Faulkner
"A panoramic, provocative account of the clash between British imperialism and Arab jihadism in Africa between 1870 and 1920"

#histbookchat. Dipped into this book. The Vietnam War is my OG military history love. And this is as close as I get to social history of the war. Anyway. The ‘More Flags’ campaign gets a mention, I was familiar with it. It was a smidge more successful than Trump’s latest tirades against NATO.
A book on the Stuart pretenders anyone? Another charity shop find for the Easter weekend. 🤴 🌊 🇬🇧 #histbookchat
#histbookchat excellent book. It is really enlightening about the quieter Vietnam protest movement. Published by New South so readily available in Australia.
Currently #Reading: Eye Corps by Jack Walker.
So, I'm not very far into the book yet but there's something about it that reminds me so much of Andrew Finlayson's Killer Kane (Scottish/Irish background, Recon, White house duty after).
We'll see how it goes.

to slog through but there are some really interesting bits from a variety of perspectives that make me glad I pushed through and read both.
These are books 12 and 13 that I've read this year, and I have NO idea what i'm going to read next!

Book cover of "Goliath: The 100-year War Between Monopoly Power and Democracy" by Stoller, Matt.
Text snippet from the book, "Goliath": "Shortly after Roosevelt called for fifty thousand planes a year, Reynolds went to see Arthur Davis of Alcoa. To Reynolds, Davis seemed as complacent about America's aluminum supply as Levelle had been about French needs. Germany would soon be able to make much more aluminum than the U.S., noted Reynolds. Perhaps Davis should ask the government to finance the buildup of capacity, to match the billion-pound-a-year capacity of the Nazis. Davis, who felt it a burden to accept funds from the government, said Reynolds was "unnecessarily alarmed." There would be no shortage.99 Davis's prediction proved laughable. In November of 1940, the Northrop Aircraft Company cut hours by 20 percent due to a metal shortage. By May 1941, work on bombers by one of the more prom-ising American aerospace companies, Boeing, had ceased because of inadequate aluminum supplies. 100 Congress reacted angrily. Senator Joseph O'Mahoney attacked Alcoa for delaying the manufacture of warplanes by "keeping supplies down in order to keep prices up." while adding that the chemical, iron and steel, metal, electric, and ship-ping cartels had "all played their part in the growth of Hitler's power." Whether the ongoing antitrust suit was decided for or against Alcoa, he said, 'it is clear that the manufacture of American airplanes needed to fill our own and British orders has been seriously delayed because parts manufacturers have been unable to get a sufficient amount of aluminum to fill their orders.'"

This week's reading is about the struggle in the #US between the forces for #democracy and monopolistic #capitalism for control over government. See the text image from the book for an example of how this affected #WW2 military production.
#histbookchat offering for Friday. As recommended by Katja Hoyer. Just started it. Nevertheless it’s extraordinary how the events and places in this book cast a long shadow into the C20th.
#HistBookChat offering for this week. I'm only about a quarter of the way in so far but it's going great so I don't think it'll go unfinished. It's a sad but inevitable thought that as the years pass, first hand accounts from the veterans will cease as the years catch up with them.
Wallace Terry book Bloods
This book has been on my shelf for a while. With @rboomhower.bsky.social coming out with a new biography of Wallace Terry, I decided it was time to read Bloods.

#histbookchat #sinology Latest arrival!! The Wall Dancers by Yi-Ling Liu (2026) @yilingliu95.bsky.social from @ithakapress.bsky.social as supplied by Aunty Lesley of
@bridgebooksdromore.bsky.social who, if all the old Irish folk tales are true, does a little dance every time she sells a book...
Just finished this book. A good, general overview of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. 3.5 stars and recommended. The last of these photos is one I took when I was in Warsaw in 2009 of one of the few former ghetto buildings that survived.

This #photofriday I am reading ‘Galleghan’s Greyhounds: The Story of the 2/30th Australian Infantry Battalion, 22 November 1940 to 10 October 1945’ by A.W. Penfold, W.C. Bayliss and K.E. Crispin.
As part of the 27th Brigade, the 2/30th fought in the Malaya Campaign and Singapore. #histbookchat /2
Looks great - bumping to the #histbookchat feed 😊
Very nice! Bumping to the #histbookchat feed for others to admire 😊
#histbookchat. This is @lmbd1418.bsky.social debut book and she has knocked it out the park. A great account of an action that deserves to be better known.
What a win! Escape from a hearing in time to raid the Eagle Bookshop in Bedford and picked this bargain for £12! Huzzah! Been hunting this years at a reasonable price. 🥳 📚 #histbookchat
#histbookchat #sinology New book from Hilde de Weerdt @hildedw.bsky.social - out in UK on 12thJuly 2026
#histbookchat. Emphatically not my period. Mind you a biography of Luther that didn’t make my head hurt would not be unwelcome.
Another month, another addition to the ever-growing pile of books that claim to “reveal the real Tommy Atkins.” This one dates from 1911. #HistBookChat #TommyAtkins
No more books about military campaigns and model kits of WW2 air land and sea weapon systems, I've had enough of those.
Starting today I'll paint dwarf and elves figurines and read only Terry Pratchett again.

Grabbed this in a London charity shop. No idea what it covers beyond the title. I’m interested in the ideas of parole and captivity. Also this war goes on, with short breaks, for 20 years which is a long time to have to deal with prisoners of war. 🇫🇷 🇬🇧 📚 #histbookchat
Great to see, and bumping to the #histbookchat feed 😊
#histbookchat. This arrived while I was away. I know the highlights so to speak, keen to have the blanks filled in. This was on the wish list and at a special price. And @universitypress.cambridge.org stop, REPEAT, stop using DPD, but for my neighbour this would have been ruined in the rain.
Giving my hand a break from signing copies of my new book to post a couple of #mapmonday photos. Here we have two Red Cross maps showing POW camps in occupied Europe and Italy. #TheUndefeated #histbookchat
